Purpose: To determine the efficacy and safety of botulinum toxin injection into the lacrimal gland as a symptomatic treatment of crocodile tear syndrome (CTS). Methods: Our study included six patients of unilateral gustatory hyper lacrimation following either an episode of facial paralysis or post trauma or any related surgery that posed a risk of damaging the facial nerve. Detailed history regarding previous trauma, duration of facial paralysis, previous significant surgery, and duration of steroid use following facial paralysis was noted. Schirmer抯 test was done at baseline and 3 months follow?up. Patients� consent was taken prior to treatment with botulinum toxin injection in the lacrimal gland. Repeat injection of 5 U botulinum toxin (type A) was administered into the lacrimal gland of all patients transconjunctivally within an interval of 1 week. All patients were followed up with Schirmer抯 test at 6 weeks and 3 months. Any complications during treatment were recorded. Results: All six patients showed complete or partial disappearance of reflex lacrimation while chewing following botulinum injection measured by a significant reduction in Schirmer抯 value. When comparing Schirmer test values before (27.8 � 3.58 mm) and after (11.6 � 2.28 mm) BTX?A injection, the differences observed (P = 0.002) were statistically significant (P < 0.05). Only two patients developed mild transitory ptosis. No other complications were noted. Conclusion: Transconjunctival botulinum toxin injection into the lacrimal gland is an effective and safe method to decrease reflex lacrimation during eating or chewing in CTS or gustatory hyper?lacrimation syndrome.

OBJECTIVE:To study the repa ir,anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Compound crocodile oil burn ointment on superficial second-degree burned skin. METHODS :The heated weight was attached to the right depilated skin of guinea pigs for 4 s to induce the model of superficial second-degree burn. After modeling ,guinea pigs were randomly divided into model group , Jingwanhong ointment group (positive control ),formula Ⅰ,Ⅱ and Ⅲ groups of Compound crocodile oil burn ointment (volume fraction 1.5%,3%,4.5%,hereinafter),with 8 guinea pigs in each group. Except for model group ,other groups were smeared with 0.7 g/guinea pigs twice a day for 14 consecutive days. The wound healing was recorded every day ,the healing rate of wound was calculated. HE staining was used to observe the histopathological changes of the wound. The serum levels of EGF ,VEGF, SOD,MDA,TNF-α and IL-1 were detected by ELISA. Eighty Kunming mice were divided into 2 groups,and then sub-grouped into model group ,Jingwanhong ointment group (positive control ),formula Ⅰ and Ⅲ groups of Compound crocodile oil burn ointment,with 10 mice in each group. Then xylene auricle swelling method and acetic acid writhing method were used to investigate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Compound crocodile oil burn ointment. RESULTS :In the burn repair experiment,after intervention of Compound crocodile oil burn ointment ,the wound area of guinea pigs gradually decreased ,and on the 14th day ,the wound had healed greatly ,and the wound healing rate increased significantly (P<0.01);serum levels of EGF and SOD were increased significantly (P<0.01),while the levels of VEGF ,MDA,TNF-α and IL-1 were decreased significantly(P<0.05 or P<0.01). The thick new epidermal layer was found in wound tissue ,and the connective tissue and neovascularization in the dermis increased significantly. In the anti-inflammatory and analgesic experiment ,after intervention of Compound crocodile oil burn ointment ,the degree of ear swelling and the times of writhing decreased significantly (P<0.05 or P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS :Compound crocodile oil burn ointment shows good skin repair ,anti-inflammatory and analgesic efficacy;the mechanism may be associated with increasing the serum levels of EGF and SOD and reducing the levels of VEGF , MDA,TNF-α,IL-1.

Parvoviruses are a diverse group of viruses that are capable of infecting a wide range of animals. In this study, we report the discovery of a novel parvovirus, tilapia parvovirus HMU-HKU, in the fecal samples of crocodiles and intestines of tilapia in Hainan province, China. The novel parvovirus was firstly identified from crocodiles fed with tilapia using next-generation sequencing. Screening studies revealed that the prevalence of the novel parvovirus in crocodile feces samples fed on tilapia (75%-86%) was apparently higher than that in crocodiles fed with chicken (4%). Further studies revealed that the prevalence of the novel parvovirus in tilapia feces samples collected at four areas in Hainan province was between 40% and 90%. Four stains of the novel parvovirus were identified in this study based on sequence analyses of NS1 and all the four strains were found in tilapia in contrast only two of them were detected in crocodile feces. These findings proposed a possibility of cross-species transmission of the novel parvovirus from tilapia to crocodile. The nearly full-length genome sequence of the tilapia parvovirus HMU-HKU was determined and showed less than 28.3% and 25% amino acid identify with other members of Parvoviridae in NS1 and VP1 genes respectively. Phylogenetic analysis base on the NS1 and VP1 amino acid sequences showed that it was most closely related to members of the novel genus Chapparvovirus which did not belong to subfamily Parvovirinae nor Densovirinae. Tilapia parvovirus HMU-HKU formed an independent branch with Chapparvovirus and separated from it in the deep root of the phylogenetic tree. This indicated that the tilapia parvovirus HMU-HKU and Chapparvovirus viruses may had a common ancestor and they independently evolved in their natural hosts. The identification of tilapia parvovirus HMU-HKU provides further insight into the viral and genetic diversity of parvoviruses and its infections in tilapia populations need to be evaluated in terms of pathogenicity and production losses in tilapia farming.

En este trabajo se revisan los casos de epibiosis reportados en los grandes vertebrados de México. La revisión de literatura incluye las publicaciones realizadas al mes de junio de 2018 considerando los 17 estados del litoral costero de la república mexicana. Se encontraron 21 trabajos de investigación, los cuales reportan un total de 73 especies epibiontes de flora y fauna asociados superficialmente a ocho especies de grandes vertebrados marinos: Lepidochelys olivácea, Eretmochelys imbricata, Chelonia mydas, Trichechus manatus manatus, Fe resa attenuata, Crocodylus acutus, C. moreletii, Caiman crocodilus chiapasius . El grupo epibionte dominante fueron los crustáceos, especialmente los cirrípedos. La interacción predominante fue el comensalismo, sin embargo se reconocieron grupos parasitarios como los copépodos del genero Balaenophilus que afectan principalmente a tortugas marinas. Se analizó la relevancia del estudio del biofilm, así como sus implicaciones ecológicas, taxonómicas por la presencia de nuevas especies para la ciencia y de conservación de las especies basibiontes para establecer criterios que ayuden a comprender su importancia en los ecosistemas marinos y por lo tanto fomentar su estudio en la región.


The aims of this work is review epibiosis reported on the large marine vertebrates from Mexico. The literature review include reporting cases on any of 17 states of the littoral coast of the Mexican Republic, and those published until June 2018. Twenty one papers were found, which report a total of 73 species of flora and fauna superficially associated with eight species of large marine vertebrates: Lepidochelys olivacea, Eretmochelys imbricata, Chelonia mydas, Trichechus manatus manatus, Feresa attenuata, Crocodylus acutus, C. moreletii, Caiman crocodilus chiapasius . The dominant epibiont group was the crustaceans, especially barnacles. The predominant interaction was commensalism, however, parasitic groups were recognized such as the copepods genus Balaenophilus that affects mainly to sea turtles. The relevance of the study of the biofilm, as well as the ecological implications, the presence of new marine species and the conservation of the basibionts species were analyzed to establish criteria that help to understand the importance in marine ecosystems and therefore encourage their study in the region.

Abstract We evaluated the nesting by Crocodylus moreletii in Lago de Catemaco, Veracruz, southeastern, Mexico. During the nesting and hatching seasons, we searched for nests along the northern margins of the lake and small associated streams. We investigated egg mortality by weekly monitoring each of the nests found, recording sign of predation (tracks and holes dug into the nest) and the effect of water level fluctuations. We not found differences to nest between inland or flooded zones. However, we found that egg size varied among nests. In nests built inland, predation was the major cause of egg mortality whereas flooding resulted in more deaths of eggs in the flooding zone. Flooding killed 25% of eggs monitored in this study. We suggest that to increase nest success in the Morelet's crocodile it is necessary to promote conservation of nesting areas around the lake, recently occupied by urban or tourist developments.


Resumo Nós avaliamos a nidificação numa população de Crocodylus moreletii no Lago de Catemaco, Veracruz, sudeste, México. Durante as temporadas de nidificação e eclosão buscamos ninhos ao longo das margens situadas ao norte do lago e pequenos riachos associados. Estabelecemos a mortalidade de ovos por semana monitorando cada ninho achado, registrando qualquer sinal de predação (rastros e buracos cavados no ninho) e o efeito das flutuações no nível da agua. Não achamos nenhuma preferência para aninhar na terra ou em áreas inundadas. Por outro lado, achamos que o tamanho de ovo foi significativamente diferente entre os tipos de ninho. Em ninhos construídos na terra, a predação foi a principal causa da mortalidade de ovos enquanto que nas áreas inundadas, inundação foi um fator importante na morte dos ovos. Em comparação com depredação, a ruptura acidental e colonização fúngica, as inundações mataram 25% de ovos monitorados. Nós sugerimos que para aumentar o sucesso de aninhamento do crocodilo do Morelet é preciso promover a conservação das áreas de nidificação ao redor do lago, recentemente ocupadas pelo desenvolvimento urbano ou turístico.

A male adult crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) was diagnosed with systemic yeast infection. Histologically, there were extensive areas of necrosis in the lung, which were associated with a diffuse severe lympho-plasmo-histiocytic inflammatory infiltrate, with numerous multinucleated giant cells, and myriads of intralesional pseudo-hyphae and yeast like organisms within distended foveolae. Necrotic foci were also observed in the mucosa of the digestive tract, trachea, tunica intima of arteries, liver, and heart, with a marked inflammatory lympho-histiocytic infiltrate, with large numbers of epithelioid macrophages and giant cells, and intralesional and intravascular pseudo-hyphae and yeast-like organisms. Oval yeast structures with 4 to 6 µm in diameter and 5 to 8 µm thick paralleled-wall pseudo-hyphae were observed in PAS or GMS stained sections. PCR with DNA template extracted from paraffin embedded tissues amplified the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene, which was sequenced and found to be identical to sequences of a new species, isolated from rotting wood in Brazil, of the genus Spencermartinsiella, which its closest relative is Spencermartinsiella cellulosicola.(AU)


Um crocodilo macho adulto (Crocodylus niloticus) foi diagnosticado com infecção fúngica sustêmica. Histologicamente, havia extensas áreas de necrose no pulmão, que estavam associadas com infiltrado inflamatório linfo-plasmo-histiocitário, com numerosas células gigantes multinucleadas e miríade de pseudo-hifas e organismos leveduriformes intralesionais, dentro de favéolas distendidas. Focos necróticos também foram observados na mucosa do trato digestório, traquéia, túnica íntima de artérias, fígado e coração, com acentuado infiltrado inflamatório linfo-histiocitário, com grande número de macrófagos epitelioides e células gigantes e hifas e organismos leveduriformes intralesionais e intravasculares. Cortes corados por PAS e GMS evidenciaram estruturas leveduriformes ovais com 4 a 6 µm de diâmetro e pseudo-hifas de paredes espessas e paralelas com 5 a 8 µm. PCR realizado com DNA extraído de material parafinizado amplificou os domínios D1/D2 da subunidade maior do gene rRNA, cuja sequencia foi idêntica a sequências de uma nova espécie, isolada no Brasil de madeira em decomposição, do gênero Spencermartinsiella, cuja espécie mais próxima é Spencermartinsiella cellulosicola.(AU)

Background and Aim: Present study provides with more anatomical information on the structure and form of the bones forming the cranium of the Nile crocodile helps in understanding the interpretation of X ray images and surgical affection of the crocodile heads. Materials and Methods: The present study was conducted on six heads of the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus). The heads were removed from their bodies and prepared by hot water maceration technique. The bones of the skull were studied separately and identified by using a specific acrylic color for each bone. Results: The cranium of the crocodile composed of the cranial bones and the facial bones. The crocodile had four paired paranasal sinuses; the antorbital, the vomerine bullar, the pterygopalatine bullar and the pterygoid sinuses. The mandible of crocodile formed from six fused bones (articular, angular, suprangular, coronoid, splenial and dentary). The X ray images were applied for identifying the paranasal sinuses which their contribution to the morphological organization of the head. Conclusion: this results show a bony variation between the crocodile, mammals and also the birds that paves the way to the comparative anatomical and radiological studies.

The karyotypes of most species of crocodilians were studied using conventional and molecular cytogenetics. These provided an important contribution of chromosomal rearrangements for the evolutionary processes of Crocodylia and Sauropsida (birds and reptiles). The karyotypic features of crocodilians contain small diploid chromosome numbers (30~42), with little interspecific variation of the chromosome arm number (fundamental number) among crocodiles (56~60). This suggested that centric fusion and/or fission events occurred in the lineage, leading to crocodilian evolution and diversity. The chromosome numbers of Alligator, Caiman, Melanosuchus, Paleosuchus, Gavialis, Tomistoma, Mecistops, and Osteolaemus were stable within each genus, whereas those of Crocodylus (crocodylians) varied within the taxa. This agreed with molecular phylogeny that suggested a highly recent radiation of Crocodylus species. Karyotype analysis also suggests the direction of molecular phylogenetic placement among Crocodylus species and their migration from the Indo-Pacific to Africa and The New World. Crocodylus species originated from an ancestor in the Indo-Pacific around 9~16 million years ago (MYA) in the mid-Miocene, with a rapid radiation and dispersion into Africa 8~12 MYA. This was followed by a trans-Atlantic dispersion to the New World between 4~8 MYA in the Pliocene. The chromosomes provided a better understanding of crocodilian evolution and diversity, which will be useful for further study of the genome evolution in Crocodylia.

To characterize the serum complement innate immune system in three species of crocodilians native to southeast Mexico. Methodology: Plasma collected from three wild crocodilian species native to southeast Mexico were exposed to sheep red blood cells (SRBCs) to measure hemolysis, which is used as an indication of serum complement immune activity. Results: Incubation of different volumes of plasma from Crocodylus acutus, Crocodylus moreletii, and Caiman crocodilus resulted in a volume-dependent increase in SRBC hemolysis. However, while maximum hemolysis for C. acutus and C. moreletii were both approximately five-fold higher than that of Ca. crocodilus. A kinetic study revealed that the hemolysis was rapid, with near-maximum activity recorded at 30 min for C. acutus and C. moreletii. However, Ca. crocodilus activity exhibited a significant increase (P<.5) only between one and two hours. A thermal analysis showed that the SRBC hemolysis was maximal at temperatures to which these species thermoregulate. The thermal profiles were similar for all three species, although the activity was lower for Ca. crocodilus (P<.01). The SRBC hemolysis was strongly inhibited by mild heat treatment (56°C,30 min) and also by EDTA, indicating that the hemolytic activity was probably due to the presence of crocodilian serum complement activity. The EDTA-inhibited activity was restored by the addition, of a 20mM excess of Ca2+or Mg2+, but not Fe2+orCu2+, thus exhibiting the specific need for Ca2+orMg2+. Conclusions: The serum complement activities of C. acutus and C. moreletii are much higher (P<.01) than Ca. crocodilus, which may be related to the maximum sizes and increased aggressive natures of C. acutus and C. moreletii.

The American crocodile, Crocodylus acutus, is widely distributed in the American neotropics. It is endangered throughout most of its range and is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Natural Fauna and Flora (IUCN) and on Appendix I of the Convention for the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES). Despite this listing, there are few published reports on population status throughout most of its range. We investigated the status of the C. acutus, at several locations along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. We carried out spotlight and nesting surveys from 2007-2009 along the Costa Rican Pacific coast in four distinct areas, coastal areas of Las Baulas (N=40) and Santa Rosa (N=9) National Parks and the Osa Conservation Area (N=13), and upriver in Palo Verde National Park (N=11). We recorded crocodile locations and standard environmental data at each observation. Encounter rates, population structure, distribution within each area and data on successful nesting (presence of hatchlings, nests, etc) were determined. We attempted to capture all crocodiles to record standard morphometrics. A total of 586 crocodiles were observed along 185.8km of survey route. The majority of animals encountered (54.9%) were either hatchlings (<0.5m) or juveniles (0.5-1.25m). The average non-hatchling encounter rate per survey for the Pacific coast was 3.1 crocodiles/km, with individual encounter rates ranging from 1.2 crocodiles/km to 4.3 crocodiles/ km in Las Baulas National Park and the Osa Conservation Area respectively. Distribution of size classes within the individual locations did not differ with the exception of Santa Rosa and Las Baulas National Parks, where hatchlings were found in water with lower salinities. These were the first systematic surveys in several of the areas studied and additional work is needed to further characterize the American crocodile population in Costa Rica.


El cocodrilo americano, Crocodylus acutus, se encuentra ampliamente distribuido en el neotrópico Americano y hay pocos estudios publicados sobre el estado de sus poblaciones en la mayor parte de su rango de distribución. Investigamos el estado del Cocodylus acutus en varias ubicaciones a lo largo de la costa del Pacífico de Costa Rica. Se realizaron muestreos nocturnos y de anidación a lo largo de la Costa Pacífica de Costa Rica en cuatro áreas en particular desde 2007-2009,’áreas costeras en los Parque Nacionales de Las Baulas (N=40) y Santa Rosa (N=9), y en el Área de Conservación de la Osa (N=13) y en el curso alto del Parque Nacional de Palo Verde (N=11). Se registraron datos de la ubicación de los cocodrilos y datos ambientales estándar en cada observación. Se determinó la tasa de encuentros, estructura de la población, distribución dentro de cada área y evidencia de anidación exitosa (presencia de neonatos, nidos, etc.). Intentamos capturar todos los cocodrilos para registrar información morfométrica estándar. En total, se observaron 586 cocodrilos a lo largo de 185.8km de ruta de muestreo. La mayoría de los animales encontrados (54.9%) fueron neonatos (<0.5m) o juveniles (0.5-1.25m). La tasa promedio de encuentros por muestreo de no-neonatos en la costa del Pacífico fue de 3.1 cocodrilos/km; con rangos de encuentro de individuos de entre 1.2 a 4.3 cocodrilos/km en el Parque Nacional de Las Baulas y el Área de Conservación Osa. La distribución por clases de tamaño no varió, a excepción de los Parques Nacionales de Santa Rosa y Las Baulas, donde se encontró a los neonatos en aguas con bajas salinidades. Estos fueron los primeros muestreos sistemáticos en varias de las áreas estudiadas y son necesarios trabajos adicionales para caracterizar las poblaciones de cocodrilo Americano en Costa Rica.

Genetic variability in captive populations of Crocodylus moreletii (Crocodylia: Crocodylidae) using microsatellites markers. Crocodylus moreletii, an extinction threatened species, represents an emblem for tropical ecosystems in Mexico. Surprisingly, there is a lack of information about their genetic constitution, which should be evaluated for a proper management ex situ and for making decisions on the release of crocodiles into natural habitats. The aim of this study was to characterize and compare the genetic variability of four populations of C. moreletii (two wild versus two born ex situ). Through PCR were amplified seven microsatellite polymorphic loci, however a heterozygote deficit, diminished by the presence of null alleles, was found in the populations (average H O=0.02). The AMOVA indicated that the highest proportion of genetic variability is within populations, and a limited genetic differentiation among populations (average F ST=0.03), probably due to high inbreeding index (average F IS=0.97). When comparing the genetic variability between and within other crocodilian species, we found that in C. moreletii is well below those reported. We concluded that the limited genetic variability in ex situ born populations is probably due to a founder effect derived from the social structure of their progenitors, and by the bottleneck effect, inferred by the limited effective population size, that historically characterizes their natural distribution in wild populations.


Crocodylus moreletii representa un emblema para los ecosistemas tropicales de México pero actualmente está amenazada por extinción. Sorprendentemente, hay una falta de información de su constitución genética, que debe ser evaluada para un manejo apropiado ex situ y para toma de decisiones en la liberación de cocodrilos a su hábitat natural. El objetivo del estudio fue caracterizar y comparar la variabilidad genética de cuatro grupos poblacionales de C. moreletii (dos silvestres y dos nacidas ex situ). Mediante PCR se amplificaron siete loci de microsatélites polimórficos, sin embargo se encontró déficit de heterocigotos en las poblaciones (promedio H O=0.02) mermado por la presencia de alelos nulos. El AMOVA indicó que la mayor proporción de variabilidad genética se encuentra dentro de las poblaciones y una limitada diferenciación genética entre poblaciones (promedio F ST =0.03), probablemente debida al alto índice de endogamia (promedio F IS=0.97). Al comparar la variabilidad genética inter e intra especies de cocodrilianos, encontramos que en C. moreletii está muy por debajo de los reportados. Se concluye que la limitada variabilidad genética de las poblaciones nacidas ex situ probablemente se debe al efecto fundador derivado de la estructura social de sus progenitores, y de las poblaciones silvestres, por el efecto cuello de botella, inferido por el limitado tamaño efectivo de población que presentó históricamente en su distribución natural.

RESUMO

I treated crocodile tears syndrome (gustatory-lacrimal reflex) after right facial nerve palsy with acupuncture. The patient was a 74-year-old female. Her right peripheral facial nerve palsy had started one and a half years earlier.<br>Most of her facial nerve palsy symptoms disappeared in about 5 months. Sixteen months after onset of the condition, her crocodile tear phenomenon occurred spontaneously. Three acupuncture points on the face were stimulated with fine needles for 10 minutes. Her crocodile tears disappeared completely with the first acupuncture session. This case suggests the possibility of acupuncture treatment for aberrant regeneration after facial nerve palsy.

Bell's palsy, most frequently occurring in peripheral facial paralysis, is a well-recoverable disease showing spontaneous healing in 70% of patients. This chronic patient of Bell's palsy has persisted for more than two years. Many medical institutes have diagnosed that it was very difficult to remedy completely. The rating score was 24 (full score : 40 points), having sequelae of synkinesis, facial spasm, crocodile tears and other problems. By thermography, the temperature difference between the normal side and the paralyzed side was 0.9°C, and the paralyzed side's temperature was lower. To improve microcirculation on the paralyzed side, electro-acupuncture treatment has been applied to the facial nerve and facial expression muscles. <BR>After evaluating mainly the score for facial paralysis and thermography, the score was increased with disappearance of the temperature difference between the normal side and the paralyzed side. Subjectively, it also became easier to move facial expression muscles, and the phenomenon of crocodile tears was decreased. Long-term electro-acupuncture treatment is considered to be effective for improving the microcirculation and enhancing the QOL of the patient.

RESUMO

To investigate the effects of Crocodile Bone Gelatin(CBG) on stress reaction and blood forming function in mice. Results showed CBG increased staying power for high temperature and low temperature, but didn′t increase anti exhaustion ability and hypoxia tolerance of mice. CBG increased platelet count, didn′t increase white blood cell count on Cyclophosphamidum causing blood forming functional obstruction.

RESUMO

The symptom of crocodile tears refers to an abnormal gusto-lacrimal reflex whereby any stimulus causing parotid secretion also induces lacrimation. It is a sequelae lesion of facial nerve, usually after the facial paralysis. The authors found the symptom of crocodile tears in one case after facial paralysis due to herpes zoster oticus and two cases after Bell's palsy.
