RESUMO

Immigrant writers depict the multi-cultural ethos, which gyrate around questions of belonging, race, gender, sexuality, cultural differences and multiple identities. This involves the recognition of 'difference', 'otherness' 'femaleness', 'colour', 'ethnicity', in short, pluralism as such. The writers reveal the Indian diaspora as heterogeneous and not as something monolithic, for the paradigms from within which each immigrant writer works out her raw materials vary. The nuances of cultural interaction become the striking thematic link evident in their works. They incorporate the experiences of dislocation experienced by immigrant women protagonists in their respective foreign spaces. The Indian immigrants, who vacillate between the two cultures, confront identity crisis which is painful, yet inevitable. Preethi Nair's One Hundred Shades of White depicts the attempts made by the protagonists Nalini and Maya to ?nd a meaningful place for themselves in the foreign culture to which they have migrated.

The author's purpose in this paper is to elaborate the narrative of an emotional geography by recounting a life journey across three continents. The author makes use of Freud's definition of uncanny and Meltzer's concept of aesthetic conflict in order to analyze the external experience of the traumatic violence of losing the country of birth. According to this author, unavoidable disruptions of involuntary migration have happened while the sense of belonging and identity has been internally developed. Homeland, exile and language/culture are the three intra and inter-subjective axes around which the author develops her narrative. She writes about the way tragedy of fate may turn into a potential space of creativity towards catastrophic losses.

Can we finish with exile? Exile, from the old French essil, which comes from the Latin exsillum, means the expelling of someone from his/her homeland and the forbidding to return. It's the enforcement to living out of a place, away from someone whose absence is mourned. In the novel The Shawl, by the American novelist Cynthia Ozick, the baby's shawl can be drunk as if it was liquid, as if one were a baby, one's own child. We cannot leave once and forever our condition of infans, that which doesn't speak. There's no lost paradise from where we were exiled - our childhood, for instance.
