RESUMO

Aim To study effects of grape seed proanthocyanidin (GSP) on learning and memory in mice. Methods After po GSP 10,20,40 mg?kg -1 respectively and contemporaneously sc D-galactose 1.25 g?kg -1 for 6 weeks, step down test and Y-type electric maze were used to examine the efficacy of GSE on learning and memory of mice first. Then lipoperoxide(LPO) level in blood and brain of these mice was measured. After po GSP 10,20,40 mg?kg -1 respectively for 2 weeks, the ability of learning and memory was measured by Morris Water Maze task. Results GSP significantly prolonged step-down latency in the mice and decreased number of errors in 5 minutes in step down test; and significantly decreased number of errors of these mice in Y-type electric maze test. LPO level in blood and brain of these mice was lower than that of model group. GSP also increased crossing platform times(CPT) and crossing platform percentages(CPP) in normal mice rested for 30 days in morris water maze test. Conclusion GSP can elevate the ability of learning and memory in mice treated with D-galactose, also improve memory retrieval at the spatial probe trials in normal mice. Mechanisms of these actions may probably be attributable antioxidative activity of GSP.

RESUMO

Secrum lipid and vitamin E levels were determined and smoking, alcohol drinking and exercise habits were asked in 357 healthy male subjects aged 49.4+/-6.7 years in Taegu. Average serum levels of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride(TG) were 189+/-43 mg/dl, 42+/-13 mg/dl and 136+/-73 mg/dl, respectively. Serum level of lipid peroxide measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS) of the subjects was 2.01+/-0.73MDA nmoles/ml and that of alpha-tocopherol was 9.53+/-3.14ug/ml. The correlation coefficients between alpha-tocopherol and serum lipids were 0.3631 for triglyceride, 0.2993 for cholesterol, and 0.3025 for total lipid. Heavy smokers who smoked more than 20 cigarettes a day had higher levels of TG and TBARS than those who smoke less. Alcohol drinkers had higher levels of TG and TBARS than nondrinkers. Vitamin E level(per ml serum)was significantly higher in the heavy smokers and drinkers, which was reflected by the higher level of serum lipid. When the level of alpha-tocopherol was expressed as alpha-tocopherol/triglyceride, it was negatively correlated with serum TBARS level and was lower in the heavy smokers than in the moderate smokers. It is concluded that vitamin E level as alpha-tocopherol/triglyceride would be better compared to alpha-tocopherol/total cholesterol or alpha-tocopherol/total lipid for the evaluation of vitamin E status in Korean men.

RESUMO

Tupaiidae has been considered as low primate by most scholars. Focal cerebral ischemia study on tupaiidae has not been reported. Acute focal cerebral ischemic model in tupaiidae was produced by cauterizing the middle cerebral artery. The results indicated that after 15 minutes and 6 hrs occlusion of the middle cerebral artery, the rCBF's in the ischemic cortex were reduced respectively to 36.7% and 39.8% of those before occlusion, and the amplitudes of SFP to 21.83% and 36.78%. After 6 hrs of ischemia, a decrease in ATP content to 5.2 times that of the control, and an increase in AMP to 4.4 times were measured. Calcium and MDA contents in ischemic cerebral cortex increased (P

RESUMO

This study was performed to investigate the exercise-induced stress in growing state in order to prevent the death during or after exercise. Thirty eight male and female subjects in junior high school were administered 5 minutes running test for 3 succesive years. Heart rate, blood pressure, electrocardiogram, and blood biochemical components were measured before and after 5 minutes running test. Prior to 5 minutes running test the investigation of the number of food intake and total steps a day were performed. The results obtained were as follows;
1) After 5 minutes running test, the subjects who had larger increment in CK-MB/ CK ratio walked fewer steps a day and had fewer number of food intake. And they had more drinks, especially juices.
2) In female subjects an excess of body fat was not a risk factor, but not in male subjects.
3) The subjects, who had larger increment in body fat than in body weight, tended to become higher levels in blood pressure and heart rate in resting than others.
4) The subjects, who walked more longer in 2 nd grade than 1 st grade in junior high school, tended to decrease the increment of heart rate before to immediately after 5 minutes running test.
5) Blood biochemical components were normal even if electrocardiogram was abnormal.
6) At 24 hours after 5 minutes running test, CK-MB/CK ratio and serum lipoperoxide levels increased and serum protein and albumin levels defreased in 3 rd grade in junior high school.
Consequently in order to prevent the death during or after exercise the investigation of food intake, total steps a day, and body fat must be administered before exercise sufficiently. And then electrocardiogram and blood biochemical components, especially CK-MB activity must be checked before, during, and after exercise testing.

RESUMO

Objective To study the influence of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus on the development of atherosclerosis. Methods The changes of the total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, oxidized low density lipoprotein, nitric monoxide and lipoperoxide in serum were investigated after the arcuate nucleus lesioned with monosodium glutamate. Results The rat with arcuate nucleus lesioned had significant higher levels of total cholesterol, oxidized low density lipoprotein and lipoperoxide in serum than that of control subjects, but the level of nitric monoxide was lower and the high density lipoprotein in serum had no change.Conclusion This study indicated that hypothalamic arcuate nucleus might exert regulative effect in the development of atherosclerosis.
