RESUMO

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is the main factor of tumor recurrence and chemotherapy failure in clinical practice. Its mechanism is relatively complex, and one of the most thoroughly studied mechanism is the overexpression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) on tumor cell membrane. Most of the chemotherapy drugs are p-gp substrates, and tumor cells will transport the chemotherapy drugs to the extracellular through p-gp mediated active transport, so that the concentration of effective drugs in the cell is reduced, resulting in drug resistance, leading to the decline of clinical efficacy. The reversal agent of P-gp can reduce the intracellular pumping of chemotherapeutic drugs by regulating the expression and transport activity of P-gp, and enhance the sensitivity of tumor cells to chemotherapeutic drugs, thus improving the therapeutic effect. In this paper, we will summarize the natural plant active ingredients that can reverse P-gp mediated MDR to provide reference for clinical and related studies.

With the cooperation of bacteria and the human body, the nutrients in food are deeply digested, utilized, and shared. In addition, symbiosis is formed between microorganisms and hosts. Such a delicate combination makes the microorganisms form the inherent flora in the human body. They obtain the biological basis for survival, and provide the necessary regulation and support for the host in terms of immunity and nutrition, through their functional metabolism and population signals. At present, most of the researches focus on the isolation and evaluation of the functional components of plants, such as plant polysaccharides, polyphenols, flavonoids, and other active functional components. However, in traditional Chinese medicine, plants are often used with whole food components. To date, studies have found that the dynamics of flora affecting human health are not fixed, nor dependent on the change of a single strain. The ecological competition and metabolic regulation between microorganisms are usually coevolved with the host. The regulatory effect of natural plants for both medicine and food mainly depends on their whole food components. This provides evidence to support the role of whole food components played in promoting the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine from the perspective of microenvironment. Therefore, the development and utilization of medicinal and edible natural plant activities should be fully understood and evaluated with flora regulation.

@#Dental caries is a common oral infectious disease in humans. It is seriously harmful to human’s health. Dental caries is closely related to the cariogenic bacteria. Now, there are many studies on the pathogenic mechanism of the cariogenic bacteria. There are many different methods to prevent dental caries. In this paper, we mainly reviewed the inhibitory effect and mechanism of anti-caries materials on cariogenic bacteria.

Secretory diarrhea provides a major health challenge worldwide, which is one of the most important reasons for children morbidity and death. The activation of Cl- channels in intestinal epithelial cells resulting in the excessive fluid secretion in the intestine is the main reason of diarrhea caused by enterotoxins. In diarrhea caused by cholera and the other bacterial enterotoxins, cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator ( CFTR) is the main cAMP-control Cl- channel to promote the fluid secretion in epithelial cells. Therefore, CFTR inhibitors are the new choices for secretory diarrhea. CFTR inhibitors include thiazolidinone, glycine hydrazide and quinoxalinedione chemical classes, and some components from natural plants also exhibit CFTR inhibition activity, however, further studies should be done.

Antiplatelet aggregation, anticoagulant and lipid-lowering drugs are clinically widely used for secondary preventive purpose in the cardiovascular patients, but there is no primary preventive agents to prevent these diseases. With the aim of developing effective primary agents for cardiovascular diseases, we tried to formulate an optimized mixture of natural plants extract containing Theae sinensis, Camelliae sinensis, Vitis vinifera, Gingko folium and curcuminoids from Curcuma longa and to evaluate its anti-thrombotic and anti-hypercholesterolemic effects in vivo. The inhibitory effect of curcuminoids on vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration were also investigated in vitro. in the animal experiments treated with hyperlipidemic diet, oral treatment of curcuminoids and natural plants extracts mixture (100 mg/kg) into male Sprague Dawley rats for 7 week simultaneously inhibited platelet aggregation as well as improved lipid profile in the blood. Compared to control group, both of curcuminoids-treated and mixture-treated groups revealed significantly decrease of total cholesterol (24.4%, 28.6%), free cholesterol (25.1%, 24.0%), cholesterol ester (14.6%, 29.0%), LDL-cholesterol (27.0%, 32.0%) and triglyceride (15.0%, 31.0%), respectively. However, both groups showed increase of HDL-cholesterol (46.6% and 51.5%) . In particular, atherogenic index of curcuminoids and mixture treatment group was significantly decreased to 47.0% and 56.0%, respectively. Furthermore, oral treatment of curcuminoids and mixture significantly inhibited collagen-induced platelet aggregation (21.1% and 29.1%, respectively), compared to control group. The anti-thrombotic values of mixture was almost similar to that of aspirin treatment (100 mg/kg) group. These results suggest that the oral treatment of curcuminoids-based natural plant extract mixture improved cardiovascular conditions in hyperlipidemic rats.
