RESUMO

Two cases of hair loss due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) sequelae as known as Long COVID were successfully treated with ninjin’yoeito. Case 1 was a 45-year-old woman who complained of hair loss about 2 months after COVID-19 (moderate II in Japanese criteria). Case 2 was a 50-year-old woman who complained of hair loss about 2 months after COVID-19 (mild). In all cases, hair loss stopped next month after treatment with ninjin’yoeito. And their hair began to grow 2 months later administration, the depression caused by hair loss improved as the symptoms improved. Hair loss is one of the symptoms with blood [TM1] deficiency, and patients suffering from Long COVID are also with qi deficiency. We gave ninjinʼyoeito for pattern of both qi and blood [TM1] deficiency with reference to traditional key of treatment, and it contributed to the improvement of symptoms.

RESUMO

We experienced a refractory case of respiratory failure with CO2 narcosis after respiratory tract infection successfully treated with daikenchuto, ninjinyoeito, and bushimatsu. The patient was an 88-year-old woman with pulmonary tuberculosis sequelae and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for which she had been receiving tiotropium, a budesonide inhalation suspension, and tulobuterol patches. She developed a fever and persistent dyspnea and was taken to our hospital by ambulance. Initially, artificial respiration was recommended because she had CO2 narcosis, but this intervention was rejected because of her advanced age. She showed persistent dyspnea and mild consciousness disturbance. Therefore, treatments by daikenchuto, ninjinyoeito, and bushimatsu were gradually introduced. As a result, her dyspnea, constipation, anorexia, and decreased consciousness improved, and the CO2 concentrations in arterial blood decreased with normalization of pH level. Artificial respiration management is the first-choice treatment for aggravated chronic respiratory failure with CO2 narcosis. However, when such medical management is not feasible, as in the present case, Kampo medicines may contribute to alleviating symptoms of respiratory failure.

RESUMO

Elderly people with chronic lung diseases are always suffered from dyspnea, so they also have much troubles in gastrointestinal functions on the basis of anxiety and insomnia. As a result, they become malnourished with a weakened immune system and are often hospitalized due to respiratory infections for a long time. Their quality of life deteriorates. This time, we experienced an elderly female patient with old pulmonary tuberculosis who was generalized weakness, showed improved appetite loss, physical activity, and dementia symptoms by taking ninjin'yoeito and kososan. She could avoid re-hospitalization due to respiratory infections. Ninjin'yoeito enhanced her energy and physical strength. As a result, she seems to have become markedly healthy. This prescription is expected to be useful for the rapidly increasing number of elderly patients with chronic lung diseases.

RESUMO

Twelve patients with iron deficiency anemia, who were unable to take iron drugs due to side effects or other reasons, were treated with oral doses of Ninjin-yoei-to (Ren-shen-yang-rong-tang), a Kampo Japanese herbal medicine, and were followed up. The onset of the blood-making effect of Ninjin-yoei-to monotherapy is slower than that of iron drug monotherapy or combination therapy with iron drugs and Ninjin-yoei-to. However, some clinical improvements in anemia were observed after continued therapy with Ninjin-yoei-to. Some patients showed normal blood counts 12 weeks after treatment with Ninjin-yoei-to. In addition, it was observed that some clinical symptoms that accompany anemia, such as dull headache and chill in the extremities, showed early improvement. Several other reports have documented similar effects with Ninjin-yoei-to. It seems that the pharmacological actions of Ninjin-yoei-to, such as increasing the absorption of nutrients required for blood-making by appetite stimulation and activation of bone marrow hematopoietic stem cells, play a role in these clinical effects. These results suggest that Kampo Japanese herbal medicines are useful for anemia therapy.

RESUMO

The effects of Rikkunshi-to (Liu jun zi tang), Hochu-ekki-to (Bu zhong yi qi tang), and Hange-shashin-to (Ban xia xie xin tang) on morphological changes in the small intestinal mucosa of mice with age were observed. The results indicated that Rikkunshi-to and Hochu-ekki-to had a beneficial effect on intestinal mucosal changes in 36-weeks-old mice. In particular, the improvement of the absorptive area of the intestinal villi and microvilli depending on the concentration of medicine was found. Ninjin-yoei-to had a strong effect on aged mice of 50 and 70 weeks. The morphology and absorptive function were significantly improved.

RESUMO

Hypersplenism is an intolerable postoperative complication of biliary atresia. Partial splenic embolizatoin (PSE) is usually performed on patients with severe hypersplenism. However, the results of this procedure are not uniform, and repeated embolization is sometimes needed. Furthermore, the procedure is unavailable or unacceptable for some patients. There are no adequate drugs for this condition. The authors administered Kamikihi-to, Hochuekki-to, and Ninjinyoei-to for five patients with hypersplenism. The results of this study suggest that these Kampo formulas can stop further deterioration of this condition. Sairei-to was also used for two patients after PSE. Sairei-to was useful for support of the post PSE condition.
