RESUMO

SUMMARY: Sex identification of a deceased human individual by means of the mandible is very important for forensic dentistry. The aim of the present study was to determine the sex of Chilean individuals by mandible analysis in panoramic radiographies. Linear and angular parameters of the mandible were analyzed from panoramic radiographies (PR). The study included PR of adult Chilean individuals, of both sexes, with optimum solution and contrast, and which allowed the angles and rami of the mandible to be viewed. Sex was determined by univariate and bivariate discriminant function analysis. The sample consisted of 594 PR of individuals aged between 18 and 84 years. The best sex predictor using univariate discriminant function analysis was the mandibular ramus height (MRH) (74.1 %), followed by the distance from the mental foramen - mandibular base (DMF-MB) (69.1 %) and the bicondylar breadth (BC) (66.7 %). The parameters that presented the lowest sex prediction were the angle of the mandible (AM) with 55.0 % and the distance between mental foramina (DMF) with 53.7 %. The best sex prediction was obtained by the step model of discriminant function analysis (80.2 %), including only three parameters: MRH, BC and DMF-MB. The parameters height of the mandibular ramus, bicondylar breadth and distance from the mental foramen - base of the mandible are good predictors of sex in Chilean individuals when used in conjunction; they are therefore indicated for sex determination in the contemporary Chilean population.

SUMMARY: The foramen magnum is an important topographic opening which connects cranial cavity and spinal canal. The analysis of the bone material established that there are differences in the shape of the foramen magnum between individuals. The aim of this study was to determine sex based on shape and size of foramen magnum using geometric morphometrics method. A study was performed on three-dimensional models (3D models) of 214 human skulls of known sex and known age (141 male skulls and 73 female skulls). The skulls are located at the museum of Medical Faculty, University of Sarajevo. Skulls belong to Bosnian population from the mid-twentieth century. All examined skulls were scanned with a laser scanner to obtain their 3D models. On 3D models of the examined skulls, four landmarks were marked on foramen magnum. Analysis of sex determination was performed using the MorphoJ program. Results of this study showed that there are sex differences in the shape and size of the foramen magnum. Sex determination based on the shape and size of the foramen magnum was showed 65.25 % accuracy for male and 63.01 % accuracy for female using geometric morphometrics method. Examination of the effect of size of foramen magnum on sexual dimorphism of shape of foramen magnum showed a statistically significant effect. Sex determination based just on the shape of foramen magnum using geometric morphometrics method was possible with 62.41 % accuracy for male and 58.90 % accuracy for female on examined sample. Sex differences on shape and size of foramen magnum were found using geometric morphometrics method on three-dimensional models of the examined skulls. The percentage of accuracy was higher for male based on the shape and size of the foramen magnum than for female.

SUMMARY: Sex estimation is an important aspect of skeletal identification. In addition, previous studies have found that the sex estimation of each race is different. Thus, it is necessary to develop discriminant function equations for the estimation of sex for the Thai population. This study aims to investigate the relationship between width, length and height of the calcaneus and talus with regards to sex and compare the effectiveness of sex estimation between the calcaneus alone, the talus alone, and between both the calcaneus and talus. A total of 200 individuals (100 males and 100 females) were used in this study; ages ranged from 19 to 94 years. Thirteen variables of calcaneus and ten variables of talus were measured. The authors created discriminant function equations for the estimation of sex and tested the efficiency of the equations obtained by using a test group of 40 individuals (20 males and 20 females). By analyzing the mean values of the variables in the calcaneus and the talus, it was shown that males were significantly different from females (p0.05). A stepwise method was used to create 6 equations for sex estimation. The equations were categorized from between the calcaneus alone, the talus alone, and between both the calcaneus and the talus, providing a sex estimation accuracy of between 88.5 and 93.0 %. Using the test group, it was shown that discriminant function equations from the calcaneus alone, the talus alone, and the calcaneus and the talus together, can estimate sex at a high level of accuracy. Sex estimation accuracy was greater than 85 % in all equations. Therefore, the discriminant function equations from the calcaneus alone, the talus alone, and between both the calcaneus and the talus, from this study can be applied to the Thai population.

OBJECTIVES@#To investigate the reliability and accuracy of deep learning technology in automatic sex estimation using the 3D reconstructed images of the computed tomography (CT) from the Chinese Han population.@*METHODS@#The pelvic CT images of 700 individuals (350 males and 350 females) of the Chinese Han population aged 20 to 85 years were collected and reconstructed into 3D virtual skeletal models. The feature region images of the medial aspect of the ischiopubic ramus (MIPR) were intercepted. The Inception v4 was adopted as the image recognition model, and two methods of initial learning and transfer learning were used for training. Eighty percent of the individuals' images were randomly selected as the training and validation dataset, and the remaining were used as the test dataset. The left and right sides of the MIPR images were trained separately and combinedly. Subsequently, the models' performance was evaluated by overall accuracy, female accuracy, male accuracy, etc.@*RESULTS@#When both sides of the MIPR images were trained separately with initial learning, the overall accuracy of the right model was 95.7%, the female accuracy and male accuracy were both 95.7%; the overall accuracy of the left model was 92.1%, the female accuracy was 88.6% and the male accuracy was 95.7%. When the left and right MIPR images were combined to train with initial learning, the overall accuracy of the model was 94.6%, the female accuracy was 92.1% and the male accuracy was 97.1%. When the left and right MIPR images were combined to train with transfer learning, the model achieved an overall accuracy of 95.7%, and the female and male accuracies were both 95.7%.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The use of deep learning model of Inception v4 and transfer learning algorithm to construct a sex estimation model for pelvic MIPR images of Chinese Han population has high accuracy and well generalizability in human remains, which can effectively estimate the sex in adults.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: Sex assessment is an important process in forensic identification. A pelvis is the best skeletal element for identifying sexes due to its sexually dimorphic morphology. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of the visual assessment in dry bones as well as 2D images and to test the accuracy of using a deep convolutional neural network (GoogLeNet) for increasing the performance of a sex determination tool in a Thai population. The total samples consisted of 250 left os coxa that were divided into 200 as a 'training' group (100 females, 100 males) and 50 as a 'test' group. In this study, we observed the auricular area, both hands-on and photographically, for visual assessment and classified the images using GoogLeNet. The intra-inter observer reliabilities were tested for each visual assessment method. Additionally, the validation and test accuracies were 85, 72 percent and 79.5, 60 percent, for dry bone and 2D image methods, respectively. The intra- and inter-observer reliabilities showed moderate agreement (Kappa = 0.54 - 0.67) for both visual assessments. The deep convolutional neural network method showed high accuracy for both validation and test sets (93.33 percent and 88 percent, respectively). Deep learning performed better in classifying sexes from auricular area images than other visual assessment methods. This study suggests that deep learning has advantages in terms of sex classification in Thai samples.

SUMMARY: Sex estimation is the first step in human identification. The mandibular ramus and the condyle have been widely used as indicators for sexual diagnosis because they are regions that undergo important morphological changes which increase sexual dimorphism. The object of the present study was to carry out a systematic review to determine the metric parameters of the mandibular ramus that present the greatest sexual dimorphism, and to sex estimation from the angle of mandible (MA). We included documents in English, Spanish and Portuguese which analysed sex estimation or sex diagnosis by metric analysis of the mandibular ramus in humans. The search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, up to December 2020. The risks of bias were analysed using the AQUA tool. The search identified 538 studies. After exclusion of duplicates and irrelevant articles, 39 studies were included for qualitative analysis. Of these, 18 studies were carried out on dry mandibles and 21 by imaging techniques, totalling 7270 participants of 14 different nationalities. We found 14 sex-estimation parameters in the mandibular ramus, plus the MA. Sex estimation by the MA is variable; it is a good predictor only for some populations. The height of the mandibular ramus, the angle of mandible, the bicondylar angle and the height of the coronoid process were the estimation parameters cited in the greatest number of studies. The mandibular ramus presents great sexual dimorphism and can be used as a sex predictor in different populations. Although some parameters of the mandibular ramus can present accuracy of almost 80 % when analysed in isolation, more accurate sex estimation is achieved when the parameters are analysed in conjunction.

SUMMARY: Sex estimation from fragmentary bone remain is still challenge for forensic pathologist. Ulna has been reported useful for sex estimation by metric analysis. This study generated sex estimation function for fragment and complete of ulnar bone in a Thai population. The function was generated from 200 pairs of ulnar bone, and others 20 pair of ulnar bone were used for test the accuracy of the functions. Olecranon width was the best single variable for sex predicting of proximal part of ulna, which right olecranon width could be classified the sex 90.5 %. While distal end width of ulna was the variable for predicting the sex of distal part, which left distal end width could be classified the sex with 83.0 %. Stepwise discriminant function analysis was applied to proximal part. For proximal part of right ulna 4 measurements were selected (inferior-medial trochlear notch length, olecranon width, olecranon-coronoid process length, and maximum proximal ulnar width), while the left side, superior trochlear notch width, olecranon width, and maximum proximal ulnar width were chosen, and their functions could be predicted the sex with 91.0 % and 90.0 %, respectively. Our results indicated the ulnar bone had high ability for estimating the sex in a Thai population.

SUMMARY: Although molecular techniques evolved considerably in last years, anthropological methods of assessing skeletal remains, continues to be an important tool in the identification process in medico legal investigations. The objective of this study was to develop a discriminant function equation for estimating sex and stature using several measurements of lumbar vertebrae in a Thai population. We studied 150 lumbar columns (75 male and 75 female) age range of 22 to 89 years from the Forensic Osteology Research Center, Chiang Mai University, Thailand. The quantitative variables with sex were analyzed by the discriminant function analysis and that with stature were calculated using linear regression. The pixel density of the major axis of the trabecular surface of superior endplate of the first lumbar vertebra had the most accuracy in sex determination. The regression equation with quantitative variables in stature estimation described 32.3 % of the total variance with standard error of estimate of 7.736 cm. Lumbar vertebrae can be used as part of the stature and sex quantitatively and qualitatively estimating in Thais incomplete skeletal remains.

Objective The morphological data of the second thoracic vertebra and the third lumbar vertebra were measured by computerized tomography (CT). The sex differences were analyzed and the discrimination equation was obtained. Methods The data of 274 adults (203 cases from experimental group and 69 cases from validation group) from central China were collected. Four linear data (maximum transverse length of vertebral body, maximum longitudinal length of vertebral body, maximum transverse length of vertebral foramen, maximum longitudinal length of vertebral foramen), one angle data (angle between spinous processes) and two area (vertebral foramen area, total cross-sectional area of vertebral body) data of the second thoracic vertebra and the third lumbar vertebra were collected, respectively. Then three ratios [maximum transverse length/ maximum longitudinal length of vertebral body, maximum transverse length/ maximum longitudinal length of vertebral foramen, vertebral foramen area/ (total cross-sectional area of vertebral body-vertebral foramen area)] and one angle (angle between spinous processes) were obtained. The discriminant equation was established for sexual discriminant analysis. Results The morphology of the second thoracic vertebra and the third lumbar vertebra was related with gender. Four single index discriminant formulae and eleven multi-index discriminant formulae were established. The 69 validation group samples were substituted into the formula for testing, and the maximum discriminant accuracy rate of the single-index discriminant formula was 75%. The maximum discriminant accuracy rate of multi-index discriminant formula was 83%. Conclusion It is feasible to conduct individual sex analysis by the morphological indexes of second thoracic vertebra and the third lumbar vertebra. The indexes have important application values in practice.

RESUMO

Objective To estimate sex based on patella measurements of Sichuan Han population by computed tomography three-dimensional volume reconstruction technique, and to explore the application value of patella in sex estimation. Methods CT three-dimensional volume reconstruction images of patella of 250 individuals were collected, the four measurement indicators including patellar length, patellar width, patellar thickness, and patellar volume were measured. The t-test was used to determine measurement indicators with sex differences. Fisher discriminant analysis was used to establish the sex discriminant function and the prediction accuracy was calculated by leave-one-out cross validation. Results The sex differences of the four measurement indicators had a statistical significance (P<0.05). The accuracy rate of the univariate discriminant function established by the patellar length was the highest (82.0%). The accuracy rates of the all indicators discriminant function and the stepwise discriminant function were 80.4% and 81.6%, respectively. Conclusion It is feasible and accurate to estimate sex of Sichuan Han population by patella measurements with CT three-dimensional volume reconstruction technique. The method may be used as an alternative for sex estimation of Sichuan Han population when other bones with higher accuracy are not available.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary since the Korean War, Korean government has initiated a four -year project beginning from the year 2000 to 2003 to excavate the remains of soldier casualties from the Korean War. During the year 2000 -2001 excavation total 555 casualties (minimum number of individual; MNI) are discovered around the southern parts of Korean peninsula. On the basis of the bone remains anthropological researches including the determination of sex, the estimation of age and stature have been carried out. All casualties are determined as male mainly based on the characteristic features of the innominate bone of the pelvis. Estimation of age is gained from 313 individuals. Over 64% of the casualties were estimated between the age 20 -24 years old and almost 20% were between the age 15 -19 years old. From these data, it has been conformed that the majority of soldiers can be classified as being in a young age category Total 270 individuals are examined for estimation of statures. Approximately 68% of the findings were estimated to have been between the height 160 -170 cm in proportion, and almost 14% of findings were below 160 cm tall. Identifying the remains of casualties are carried out by uncovered belongings, taking note of eyewitness accounts, and applying scientific methods. A total of 34 individual names were identified, and among them only four soldiers have been confirmed. 27 are still in the process of verification, and the rest are nearly impossible to identify.

RESUMO

Objective To construct the functions for sex discrimination with Chinese humerus. Methods 12 variables of both left and right were selected from 103 individuals with known sex from 9 different provinces. The data were then obtained. The test was performed between males and females by using SPSS soft ware. After eliminate those variables which sex difference was not obvious. Sex discriminating functions were established by using Fisher mothod. Results There were 20 discriminating functions by the measuring single Chinese humerus, Sex correct rate was 75.9% ~89.3%. They were 2 discriminating functions of the proximal humerus epiphysis. The sex correct rate was 83.6% -85.7%. They were 2 discriminating functions of the middle humerus diaphysis. The sex correct rate was 81.3 % -83.9 %. They were 2 discriminating functions of the distal humerus epiphysis. The sex correct rate was 82%. The sex correct rate of the whole left humerus was 87% and of the whole right humerus was 90.9%. The sex correst rate of both left and right humerus was 96.3 % . Conclusion The sex discriminating functions were new method for forensic science practice in China.
