RESUMO

ABSTRACT Beauregard sweet potato is an orange color crop rich in β-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. β-carotene improve immunity and decrease of incidence of degenerative diseases. The objective of this work was to introduce sweet potato in the diet through of some food products, such as bread, cake and sweets. The effect of processing on the chemical composition, as well as the quantification of phenols and total carotenoids, antioxidant activity, and sensory acceptability were evaluated. Cakes and coconut sweets presented higher levels of carotenoids. Higher phenolic and antioxidant activity were verified in cocoa sweets. All foods had good acceptability: 86% for bread, 83.3% for cake and 84,4%, and 86% for coconut and cocoa sweets, respectively. Servings of 95g of roasted sweet potato, 330g of bread, 182g of cake, 187g of coconut sweet and 391g end of cocoa sweet, would provide the recommended daily intake of vitamin A for children 10 years and older. It was concluded that the elaboration of foods containing sweet potato is a viable alternative to inserting biofortified foods into the human diet.

We describe a case of craving for menthol sweets in a 53-year-old woman with excessive consumption of menthol sweets (100 units/day). She was admitted with a history of rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, anxiety associated with onychophagia and pinching of the skin. Organic disorders were ruled out with paraclinical tests and in-hospital treatment was administered. At discharge, the patient's condition was stable, but because of exacerbated pain due to the rheumatological disease, she presented depressive symptoms, requiring her medication to be adjusted. Conclusions: The "food craving" and anxiety present pathophysiological similarities. Mints have different mechanisms or ways in which they can counteract or control these symptoms, including an increase in serotonin, binding to GABA-A receptors and stimulation of the nicotinic receptor in nerve cells.

A school-based cross-sectional study in 2007 evaluated the prevalence and associated factors of daily consumption of soft drinks, sweets and fried foods among adolescents (15 to 20 years of age) in public schools in Caruaru in the state of Pernambuco. To evaluate the factors associated with the daily consumption of the above foods, a multivariate and hierarchical analysis was conducted using Poisson regression, with social and demographic variables at the first hierarchical level, behavioral variables at the second level and dietary standards at the third level. Consumption of soft drinks, sweets and fried foods at least once a week was declared by 90.9%, 95.4% and 89.6% of the adolescents, respectively. The corresponding prevalence of the daily consumption of these items was 30.2%, 42% and 28.3%. The daily consumption of sweets was 21% higher among girls and 25% higher among adolescents who ate rice and beans daily. With respect to fried foods, girls mentioned 37% greater consumption than boys. Adolescents who consumed meat every day admitted a 43% higher daily consumption of fried foods. The consumption of soft drinks, sweets and fried foods among the adolescents from Caruaru was high and showed a homogeneous consumption standard for most variables analyzed.

RESUMO

This study aimed to elicit the variability of appetite and food intake patterns in female college students during different menstrual phases. The craving for certain foods and physiological and psychological symptoms of menstrual phase (pre- and post-menstrual) were investigated by self-administered questionnaire. Three hundred and sixty six students who were 20.9 years old and had 19.8 kg/m2 of BMI volunteered to participate in this study. Most of the subjects (89.5%) experienced the premenstrual syndrome (PMS) such as irritation, bodily fatigue, nervosity. Symptoms such as tiredness, stomachache, changes in taste and increased appetite were pointed out to be experienced at the onset of the menstrual cycle. The variability of food intake in premenstrual phase, 11.0% of subjects had decreased food intake where as 68.8% had experienced increased intake. The postmenstrual phase, 20.1% had decreased food intake while 45.2% had experienced increased intake due to changes in the appetite. Before starting menstruation, most of the subjects craved for sweets. The group who had experienced abnormal appetite during menstrual phase was significantly high ratio in overweight and obese students (p < 0.05). We also observed an association between the PMS score and the variability of eating patterns during the menstrual phase. The students who experienced changing appetite and food intake had significantly high PMS score in the premenstrual phase (p < 0.01) and postmenstrual phase (p < 0.05). These results suggested a need for future study related to changes in the actual nutrient intake and activity level during the menstrual phase.

RESUMO

Introduction: Three types of burfi (a sweet confection), namely, foxtail millet burfi (FMb), barnyard millet burfi (BMb) and control Bengal gram flour burfi (CBGFb) were developed for the consumption of diabetics. Methods: The flour blends for FMb and BMb contained 43% of foxtail millet and barnyard millet flour, respectively and 57% of bengal gram flour. The CBGFb was prepared by using 100% Bengal gram flour and served as control. The burfis were analysed for sensory quality, acceptability, storage stability, nutritional quality, glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL). Results: All the three burfis were acceptable to diabetic as well as non-diabetic subjects and could be stored easily for 15 days under ambient conditions. The millet burfis possessed fibre and starch contents which contributed to a low GI value of 37.5 for FMb compared to the control. The GL values were 14.7, 17 and 17.9 for FMb, BMb and CBGFb, respectively. Conclusion: The millet, especially foxtail millet which had a low GI value has the potential of being served to diabetics in the form of sweets.

SweetÆs syndrome or acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis is an uncommon illness characterized by the sudden appearance of plaques and painful erythematous skin nodules on face, extremitiesor trunk associated with fever, general discomfort and neutrophilia with histopathologic pattern of neutrophilic dermatosis. The etiology of SweetÆssyndrome is unknown. It is presumed to be atype of hypersensitivity reaction caused by aprevious process. It has a female predominance. We report the case of a 33 year old man with extremely painful erythematous-infiltrated plaques in legs. Lesions appeared four days after finishing a treatment based in penicillin for leptospirosis. It developed by outbreaks

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The clinical study of Sweets syndrome has never been reported in Korea. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the clinical observations and associated diseases of Sweets syndrome. METHODS: During a 5-year-period from Jan. 1990 to Dec. 1994, 32 patients were evaluated in regard to age incidence, sex ratio, location of skin lesions, and associated diseases. RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS : 1, The age distribution was in the range of 21-70 years. Most patients were between 31 to 40 years of age. There were 12 male patients and 20 female giving a sex distribution of 1.7: 1 ratio in favor of the fernale. 2. The most cornmon site of iavolvement was the arm(37.5%). 3. ESR was increased in 21 patients(65.6%) and leukocytosis was present in 13 patients(40.6) 4. The most common associated disease was Behcets disease(31.2%). 5. Steroids were used mos frequently for treatment of Sweets syndrome with 12 patients(37.5%). Recurrence occurred in 7 patients(21.9%). The results show that the iniidence of Sweets syndrome in men in Korea is not as rre as was previously thought and tfiat there are many associated diseases especially Behcets disease.
