O cuff do tubo endotraqueal é usado para prevenir vazamento de gás e aspiração do conteúdo orofaríngeo pela interface traquéia e tubo endotraqueal em pacientes sob ventilação mecânica. Alguns autores preconizam que a pressão intracuff deve ser freqüentemente calibrada para se manter entre valores de 18 a 22mmHg com o objetivo de evitar e/ou minimizar lesões na parede traqueal, além de prevenir aspiração do conteúdo orofaríngeo. Como os aparelhos para a medição da pressão intracuff são caros, essa pressão pode ser calibrada conectando na válvula de ar do tubo-piloto do tubo endotraqueal uma torneirinha de três vias, ficando uma das vias ligada ao esfigmomanômetro de coluna de mercúrio, sem o seu manguito, e a outra via a uma seringa de 5ml. Dessa forma a pressão intracuff pode ser ajustada manipulando a seringa. Esse conjunto de peças custa aproximadamente 300 vezes menos que o aparelho específico para esse procedimento.
The endotracheal tube cuff is used to prevent gas leak and also aspiration of oropharyngeal contents through the interface trachea and endotracheal tube in mechanically ventilated patients. Some authors recognize that the intra-cuff pressure has to be frequently calibrated to maintain the values between 18 and 22mmHg in order to avoid and/or minimize the damage in the tracheal wall and also to prevent aspiration of oropharyngeal contents. Since these measure gauges are very expensive, the intra-cuff pressure can be calibrated connecting a threeway tap in the air valve of the pilot tube of the endotracheal tube, one of the other two entries connected with the sphygmomanometer of the column of mercury, without the cuff, and the third connection to a 5ml syringe. This way the intra-cuff pressure can be adjusted by manipulating the syringe. This set of pieces is approximately 300 times cheaper than the specific gauge for this procedure.
