RESUMO

@#Introduction: Poor nutritional status of female adolescents does not only have an impact on themselves but also have an impact on the next generation. Food intake and dietary quality are important to support nutritional status during adolescence. This study aims to determine the relationship between food intake and dietary quality with nutritional status of female adolescent in Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia. Methods: This research was an observational study using a cross-sectional design. The subjects of this study were female adolescents aged 12-18 years with a total sample of 222 people. Data of food intake and dietary quality were measured using recall method, while nutritional status data were calculated using BMI for Age Z scores (BAZ). A linear regression model was used to predict the relationship of food intake and dietary quality to the nutritional status of female adolescents. Results: The average BAZ was 0.1±1.0, with an average dietary quality of 34.6±6.6%. The average energy intake was 1507.9±472.3 kcal, protein 32.4±11.0 g, carbohydrates 258.6±84.4 g, fat 44.9±19.9 g and fiber 3.88±2.7 g. Food intake (energy, protein, and fiber) and dietary quality were related to nutritional status (BAZ) in female adolescents (p<0.05). Conclusion: The balance of food intake and dietary quality is important to maintain the nutritional status of female adolescent properly. Nutritional interventions are needed to support female adolescent entering pregnancy with good nutritional status.

RESUMO

Abstract Objective: In previous studies, smaller renal volumes were reported in prematurely born infants, however, these renal volumes were not corrected for body surface area, the main determinant of renal size. Given the rapid growth of the renal cortex after premature birth, the authors hypothesized that corrected volumes would not differ from healthy controls. Methods: Ambispective cohort study with prospective follow-up of prematurely born babies in a large specialized center and retrospectively recruited healthy control group. Children were assessed for renal length and renal volumes at age 5 by three independent ultrasonographers. Detailed anthropometry, blood pressure and renal function were also obtained. Age independent z-scores were calculated for all parameters and compared using descriptive statistics. Results: Eighty-nine premature study participants (median 32 weeks gestational age) and 33 healthy controls (median 38 weeks gestational age) were studied. Study participants did not differ in age, sex, Afro-Colombian descent, height, blood pressure, serum creatinine, or new Schwartz eGFR. Premature study participants had a significantly lower weight (17.65 ± 2.93 kg) than controls (19.05 ± 2.81 kg, p = 0.0072) and lower body surface area. The right renal volumes were significantly smaller (39.4 vs 43.4 mL), but after correction for body surface area, the renal volume and renal length z-scores were identical for both kidneys (mean right kidney -0.707 vs -0.507; mean left kidney -0.498 vs -0.524, respectively). Conclusion: Renal volumes need to be corrected to body surface area. After correction for body surface area, 5-year-old healthy and prematurely born children have comparable renal volumes.

RESUMO

Objective:To investigate the application of fetal atria septal excursion index (ASEI) combining cardiovascular structure Z-scores in fetuses with redundancy foramen ovale flap (RFOF).Methods:Twenty-two fetuses with RFOF diagnosed by fetal echocardiography in Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital from December 2019 to September 2021 were selected as the RFOF group and 62 normal fetuses as the control group. The movement of the foramen ovale valve was observed in the four chamber view, and the maximum distance of the foramen ovale valve bulging, the total length of the atrial septum, the foramen ovale diameter, the diameters of the aortic valve, the pulmonary valve, the ascending aorta, the aortic isthmus, the descending aorta and the left and right ventricular areas were measured. ASEI, foramen ovale diameter, foramen ovale valve excursion distance, the ratio of foramen ovale diameter to total atrial septum length, aortic valvular annular diameter Z-score(AOV Z-score), pulmonary valvular annular diameter Z-score(PV Z-score), ascending aorta diameter Z-score(AOA Z-score), ascending aorta diameter Z-score (AOA Z-score), aortic isthmus Z-score (AOI Z-score), descending aorta diameter Z-score (AOD Z-score), diastolic right ventricular area Z-score (RV area Z-score) and diastolic left ventricular area Z-score(LV area Z-score) were compared between the two groups. RFOF fetuses were followed up to observe the prognosis. Results:There were significant differences in fetal ASEI, foramen ovale diameter, foramen ovale valve excursion distance, the ratio of foramen ovale diameter to total atrial septum length, AOV Z-score, PV Z-score, AOA Z-score, AOI Z-score, AOD Z-score and LV area Z-score between RFOF group and control group (all P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in RV area Z-score ( P>0.05). Postnatal follow-up outcomes in RFOF group indicated that 17 of 22 cases (77.3%) had live birth, five cases (22.7%) were lost at follow-up. Twelve of 17 live birth cases (70.5%) showed structurally normal heart by postnatal echocardiography, 3 cases (17.6%) showed mild coarctation of the aorta with nonsignificant hemodynamics under clinical follow-up, 2 cases (11.8%) were diagnosed with coarctation of the aorta, pulmonary artery dilation and atrial septal defect, and died after operation, of which one case died of infections pneumonia after operation. Another case was born prematurely at 36 + 4 weeks with a birth weight of 2 650 g, and neotal echocardiography showed ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect and patent ductus arteriosus. Conclusions:ASEI can quantitatively evaluate the behavior of foramen ovale valve mobility and in combination with Z-scores of cardiovascular structures can be used to assess the morphological changes of fetal hearts. Although some fetuses with RFOF demonstrate left and right ventricular disproportion and coarctation of the aorta in fetal echocardiography, most fetuses have a good prognosis.

RESUMO

Background: The chars depend mostly on the whims of the current of river. The location, delicate ecological conditions and the political situation arising out of the ill- defined problem of immigration have collectively made the chars of Barpeta a challenging place to live. The worst sufferers are the children before entering adolescence period. This study aims to assess the level of nutritional status among the pre-adolescent children. Methods: 466 children (250 boys and 216 girls) from age 3 to10 years were measured cross-sectionally for their height and weight. Sample was collected from Chasra No. 2 char which fall under Baghbor revenue circle of the district. Using Z-score value, the underweight, wasting and stunting status was evaluated. Results: It has been detected that 39.2% boys and 18.98% girls are underweight. The percentage of stunted among them is 16% for the boys and 12.96% for the girls. With the increase of age the prevalence of stunting has decreased. BMI-for -age has detected 24% boys and 24.53% girls to be affected. When the children of the present study were compared with other populations, they were below the tribal children but above other children in their nutritional status. Conclusions: The prevalence of stunting is lesser than underweight percentage, reflecting their current nutritional status to be more affected than the long term exposure to undernutrition. The prevalence of underweight and stunting is higher among the boys than the girls. Further analytic studies are required to identify the underlying causes of their status.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the clinical value of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) measured pulmonary artery parameters and pulmonary valve annulus Z scores for choosing the type of operation in complete repair of pediatric tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) Methods: A total of 143 patients received complete repair of pediatric TOF in our hospital were retrospectively studied. The patient's median age was 8 (1-171) months. Based on the type of operation, patients were divided into 2 groups: Trans-annular patch group, n=100 and Valve sparing repair group, n=43. Conventional TTE parameters, right ventricular outflow parameters and pulmonary valve annulus Z scores were compared between 2 groups; pulmonary valve annulus diameters measured by TTE and surgery were studied by correlation analysis. Results: Compared with Valve sparing repair group, Trans-annular patch group had decreased left ventricular end diastolic diameter (23.14±3.82) mm vs (25.23±4.56) mm, pulmonary valve annulus diameter (8.52±2.18) mm vs (10.01±2.61) mm and main pulmonary artery diameter (67.31 vs 82.91) all P<0.05. With reduced value of pulmonary valve annulus Z scores, the constituent ratio in Trans-annular patch group was gradually increasing and in Valve sparing repair group was gradually decreasing, all P<0.05. Correlation analysis indicated that pulmonary valve diameters measured by TTE and surgery had moderate agreement (r=0.581, P<0.001). Conclusion: TTE measured pulmonary valve annulus diameter, main pulmonary artery diameter and pulmonary valve annulus Z scores were the objective parameters provided to surgeon at pre-operation, which had clear clinical value.

RESUMO

The meta-analysis has become a widely used tool for many applications in bioinformatics, including genome-wide association studies. A commonly used approach for meta-analysis is the fixed effects model approach, for which there are two popular methods: the inverse variance-weighted average method and weighted sum of z-scores method. Although previous studies have shown that the two methods perform similarly, their characteristics and their relationship have not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we investigate the optimal characteristics of the two methods and show the connection between the two methods. We demonstrate that the each method is optimized for a unique goal, which gives us insight into the optimal weights for the weighted sum of z-scores method. We examine the connection between the two methods both analytically and empirically and show that their resulting statistics become equivalent under certain assumptions. Finally, we apply both methods to the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium data and demonstrate that the two methods can give distinct results in certain study designs.

determinant of oral health indicating the generalawareness of oral hygiene and its observance wasa major factor. Females were more prone to dental caries than the males and the severity was also significantly higher in the former.

RESUMO

This cluster-randomized interventional trial at peri-urban settings of Karachi was conducted to evaluate the impact of maternal educational messages regarding appropriate complementary feeding (CF) on the nutritional status of their infants after 30 weeks of educational interventions delivered by trained community health workers. Mothers in the intervention group received three education modules about breastfeeding (BF) and appropriate CF at a baseline visit and two subsequent visits 10 weeks apart. The control group received advice about BF according to national guidelines. Infants’ growth [weight, length, and mid-upper arm-circumference (MUAC), stunting, wasting, and underweight] were measured at four time points. At the end of the study, infants in the intervention group had a higher mean weight of 350 g (p=0.001); length of 0.66 cm (p=0.001), and MUAC of 0.46 cm (p=0.002) compared to the controls; proportionate reduction of stunting and underweight were 10% (84% vs 74%; ORadj 8.36 (5.6-12.42) and 5% (25% vs 20%; ORadj 0.75 (0.4-1.79) in the intervention compared to the control group. For relatively food-secure populations, educational interventions about appropriate CF to mothers had a direct positive impact on linear growth of their infants.

RESUMO

Objectives: Growth curves are the most important tools for the assessment of growth of children, which could further helps to develop preventive interventions. Geographical and physical differences necessitate using national growth curves. This study aims to construct growth curves using anthropometric measurements namely weight and height for Indian children using cross-sectional data from National Family and Health Surveys. Materials and Methods: Box- Cox power exponential, a flexible distribution, was used that offers to adjust kurtosis and improves the estimation of extreme percentiles. LMS-methods that fit skewed data adequately and generate fitted curves that follow closely the empirical data, with maximum penalized likelihood, Akaike information criteria (AIC) and generalized AIC with penalty 3 were used to construct the growth curves. Before fittings this model factors which influence the nutritional status of children were examined, similar to World Health Organization (WHO) (2006) factors, namely standard infant feeding practices, sanitation, non-smoking mothers additionally poverty (household consumable assets based). Results: Model fitted in LMS-model and standard based on height and weight for children aged 0–60 months was obtained after iteration for degrees of freedom for the parameters. Growth curves for mean Z-scores and percentiles were constructed for both sexes and significant lower values were noticeably found to be set as growth-standard compared to WHO-standards. Conclusion: Study showed the prospect of constructing regional/national growth curve and their need for the assessment of children’s growth, which could help to identify undernourished-children at national level. There is an urgent need to collect longitudinal data of children to fit the growth curve of children in India.
