RESUMO

Feather samples were obtained from the following Psittaciformes birds: Amazona amazonica, Amazona aestiva, Aratinga jandaya, Brotogeris spp., Ara ararauna and Ara chloropterus (total of 37 individuals). These birds were housed at the Wild Animal Screening Center of Maranhão, São Luís, Brazil. Four feathers were taken from the following regions: head, back, wings, belly/breast, thighs, and tail/covert. Mites were found on 17 birds (45.94%). Astigmatid mites belonging to the genera Fainalges (Xolalgidae), Chiasmalges (Psoroptoididae) and Tanyaralichus (Pterolichidae) were identified. The highest dominance coefficient was for the mite Fainalges sp. (DC= 96.29). Chiasmalges sp. was obtained only from Ara chloropterus, and Tanyaralichus was found in A. aestiva. The genus Fainalges was obtained from all the species of Psittaciformes studied, except for A. ararauna. In evaluating mite density according to body region, statistical differences were found between the back and wing regions (P= 0.041), back and thighs (P= 0.02), wings and tail (P= 0.002), belly and tail (P= 0.031) and thighs and tail (P= 0.001). The morphological variations observed in Fainalges spp. suggested the existence of three species that probably have not been described yet. This was the first record of the genus Tanyaralichus in Brazil.(AU)


As amostras de penas foram obtidas das seguintes aves da ordem Psittaciformes: Amazona amazonica, Amazona aestiva, Aratinga jandaya, Brotogeris spp., Ara ararauna e Ara chloropterus, totalizando 37 aves, alojadas no Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres do Maranhão, São Luís, Brasil. Colheram-se quatro penas de cada uma das regiões: cabeça, dorso, asas, ventre/peito, coxas e cauda/crisso. Verificou-se a presença de ácaros em 17 aves (45,94%). Foram identificados ácaros Astigmata, pertencentes aos gêneros Fainalges (Xolalgidae), Chiasmalges (Psoroptoididae) e Tanyaralichus (Pterolichidae), sendo o maior coeficiente de dominância correspondente ao ácaro Fainalges sp. (CD= 96,29). Chiasmalges sp. foi obtido apenas de Ara chloropterus, e Tanyaralichus foi encontrado em A. amazônica. O gênero Fainalges foi obtido de todas as espécies de Psittaciformes estudadas, exceto em A. ararauna. Na avaliação da densidade de ácaros por região do corpo, verificou-se diferença estatística entre regiões dorsal e asas (P= 0,041), dorsal e coxas (P= 0,02), asas e caudal (P=0,002), ventral e caudal (P= 0,031) e coxas e caudal (P= 0,001). Variações morfológicas observadas em Fainalges spp., sugerem a existência de três espécies provavelmente ainda não descritas. Este é o primeiro registro do gênero Tanyaralichus no Brasil.(AU)

O presente trabalho objetivou estudar a biologia de Agistemus brasiliensis Matioli, Ueckermann & Oliveira nas temperaturas de 15; 20; 25; 30 e 35°C, alimentada com Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) e pólen de Thypha sp. em condições de laboratório. Tabelas de vida de fertilidade foram calculadas para determinar os parâmetros biológicos. A temperatura ideal para o desenvolvimento de A. brasiliensis foi 29°C. Os valores de T (ciclo de vida - dias), R0 e r m, na temperatura de 30°C, foram de 13,95; 16,25 e 0,20, respectivamente. A potencialidade de predação de A. brasiliensis foi estudada para as densidades populacionais de 5; 10; 20; 40 e 60 adultos de B. phoenicis a 29°C, em arenas de 3 cm de diâmetro, sobre frutos de laranja-pêra. A densidade de 20 ácaros foi suficiente para que o predador consumisse seu número máximo de presas (7,6 ácaros por dia). Densidades acima de 40 ácaros da leprose proporcionaram 4,7 ovos por dia, em comparação aos 2,5 ovos por dia obtidos na densidade de 20 ácaros da leprose.


The present work aimed to study the biology of Agistemus brasiliensis Matioli, Ueckermann & Oliveira at the following temperatures, namely 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C, fed with Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) and Typha pollen, in laboratory conditions. Life tables were calculated to evaluate the biological parameters. The optimal development of A. brasiliensis took place at 29°C. The values of T (time of generation - days), R0 and r m at 30°C were, 13.95, 16.25 and 0.20, respectively. The prey consumption of A. brasiliensis was studied at the densities of 5, 10, 20, 40 and 60 leprosis mite females per cage (3 cm in diameter) on citrus fruits at 29°C. The maximum prey, namely 7.6 B. phoenicis females per day, were consumed at a density of 20 leprosis mites. At densities of above 40 leprosis mites per cage, A. brasiliensis oviposits 4.7 eggs per day, in comparison to 2.5 eggs per day at 20 mites per cage.

Spring chickens were used for feeding Argus persicus [females] daily over one week during both winter and summer seasons. Acquired resistance to ticks was monitored by the failure of ticks to replenish a blood meal from chickens bitten repeatedly by the infesting ticks during winter and summer seasons, measurements of anti-tick activity in the chicken sera and detection of changes in their serum proteins. Chickens were bled after the 4th feeding, during the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks post-feeding. The titer of anti-tick antibody was determined in the chicken sera by an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA] technique. The change in sera protein bands after Argas persicus female repeated feeding was studied by the use of 10% SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The results showed that the non- feeding percentage in A. persicus was significant in both winter and summer seasons. The highest concentration of antibodies against A. persicus was detected after the fourth feeding and the lowest titer was reported in sera collected after the fourth week in both seasons. Infested chicken serum proteins electrophoresis showed different patterns of separation from the non-infested chickens. The protein bands of the non-infested chicken sera had 5 and 10 bands in the winter and summer seasons; but in infested chicken sera, it ranged between 12-17 and 14-18 bands in winter and summer seasons, respectively
