RESUMO

Vaccine is the name applied generally to a substance of the nature of dead or attenuated living infectious material introduced into the body with the object of increasing its power to resist or get rid of a disease. Vaccines are generally prophylactic, i.e. they ameliorate the effects of future infection. One such vaccine considered here is the "Periodontal vaccine". Till date, no preventive modality exists for periodontal disease and treatment rendered is palliative. Thus, availability of periodontal vaccine would not only prevent and modulate periodontal disease, but also enhance the quality of life of people for whom periodontal treatment cannot be easily obtained. The aim of the research should be development of a multispecies vaccine targeting the four prime periodontal pathogens, viz. Porphyromonas gingivalis, T. forsythus, T. denticola and A. comitans. Success is still elusive in case of periodontal vaccine due to the complex etiopathogenesis of the disease.

RESUMO

Bacteriodes fragilis group can inhibit the phagocytosis and killing of co-existing aerobes. Forty six strains of B.fragilis group are tested for their ability to resist phagocytosis and inhibit the killing of indicator organism, E. coli by denoting the viable count. Among the species of B. fragilis group, the inhibitory index of the phagocytic system was the highest with B. fragilis followed by B. thetaiotamicron. None of the strains of B. fragilis group were phagocytosed or killed in this system. This property of resisting the phagocytosis and killing of E. coli by B. fragilis group might be the contributing factor towards their prevalence in mixed infections.

RESUMO

The counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE) test using sonicated antigens of Bacteroides fragilis NCTC 2553 and a B. asaccharolyticus strain, standardised in the laboratory yielded a negative result in the 50 normal sera tested, while it was positive in 24 of 34 (71%) patients with infection due to black pigmented bacteroides and in 10 of 15 (67%) with B. fragilis infection. The microagglutination test (MAT) done in parallel showed a positivity of only 44 and 40 per cent respectively. The CIE test done with B. asaccharolyticus antigen was negative in 87 per cent of patients with infection due to B. fragilis whereas MAT showed cross reactivity to a greater extent.

RESUMO

This study examined the difference between the serum antibody profiles in refractory adult periodontitis patients (group A), and compared to those (group B) who responded well to conventional periodontal treatment. The levels of specific IgG antibody to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Bacteroides gingivalis, Fusibacteriumnucleatum, and Eikenella corrodens were assessed in a group of 19 patients (group A) and 11 patients (group B). Specific IgG serum antibody levels were estimated using biotin-avidin linked immunosorbent assay (BALISA). Results indicated that Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, and Bacteroides gingivalis had very high levels of specific circulating antibody in the sera of both groups of patients; whereas, Fusobacterium nucleatum and Eikenella corrodens showed considerable lower levels of antibody than the other two antigens. However, the differences between the two groups with regard to the antibody levels against different bacterial antigens were not statistically significant.
