RESUMO

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Indoor residual spraying of Reldan 40% EC @ 0.5 and 1 g/m2 was done in Tatarpur and Chauna villages, respectively in Dhaulana PHC, Distt. Ghaziabad (U.P.) to evaluate its impact against Anopheles culicifacies and malaria incidence. Results were compared with that of Piyawali village which was taken as control area. METHODS: Four rounds of spray were done from 1999--2000 in human dwellings and cattlesheds in experimental villages. Entomological parameters--man hour density, parity rate, sporozoite rate, etc. were monitored using standard procedures. Epidemiological indicators such as SPR, SFR, cases/000, Pf/000 were also calculated. Cone bioassays as per WHO method were also carried out to assess the persistence of the insecticide on different surfaces. RESULTS: Entomological results revealed that spraying of reldan @ 0.5 g/m2 resulted in significant reduction in adult densities of An. culicifacies in sprayed villages over the control village. Spraying also resulted in reduction of percent parous females, reduction in malaria incidence (p < 0.05). INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: Reldan showed high efficacy @ 0.5 g/m2 in controlling the densities of An. culicifacies and malaria incidence. However, double dosage of reldan @ 1 g/m2 can be used for comprehensive vector control provided > 95% spray coverage is achieved.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The resistance in vectors to conventional insecticides warrants development of newer insecticides for mosquito control besides use of other counter-measures. The present study was undertaken to test the efficacy of a new and toxicologically safe organophosphorus compound, Reldan (chlorpyrifos-methyl) and compare its efficacy with Dursban (chlorphyrifos-ethyl) against larvae of different mosquito vectors under laboratory conditions and against Culex quinquefasciatus in three larval habitats. METHODS: The susceptibility of larvae of mosquito vector species to Reldan and Dursban was determined by following the standard procedure and the LC50 in mg/l values were calculated by probit analysis. The insecticides were evaluated in the larval habitats of C. quinquefasciatus in and around Pondicherry. The percentage reduction in larval density was calculated using Mulla's formula and duration showing more than 80 per cent reduction was calculated by annotating the graph obtained by plotting percentage reduction in larval density against days of post-treatment. RESULTS: Dursban and Reldan were effective against Anopheles fluviatilis larvae at lower LC50 of 5.90 x 10(-7) and 1.07 x 10(-9) mg/l respectively compared to other species of mosquitoes. Dursban and Reldan were equally effective against Aedes aegypti, An. stephensi and An. culicifacies. Reldan was about nine times more effective than Dursban against C. quinquefasciatus with respective LC50 of 1.17 x 10(-4) and 1.34 x 10(-3) mg/l. Field evaluation of these insecticides against C. quinquefasciatus showed that Reldan and Dursban at the application rate of 500 g (ai)/ha reduced immature density by more than 80 per cent for a mean duration of 4.0 and 4.5 days and 4.6 and 3.7 days in cesspits and cement tanks respectively. In U-drains, at 500 g (ai)/ha, Reldan was effective for a period of 3.6 days whereas, Dursban was not effective. It was effective for 4.0 days only at 1000 g(ai)/ha. There was no significant increase in the residual activity of both Dursban and Reldan with increase in application rates. INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSION: In view of the lack of sustained control with the applications, it is inferred that these insecticides will be of limited use as larvicides against C. quinquefasciatus breeding in polluted habitats.

We conducted a study to determine the laboratory and field efficacy of neem oil towards anopheline larvae. No difference in LC50 was observed between laboratory and field strains for temephos, chlorpyriphos-methyl/fenitrothion and neem oil. No difference in susceptibility was found after 3 months of application every 2 weeks. Water treated with a single application of traditional larvicides was free of larvae after 4 weeks; neem oil-treated water, however, was free after 2 weeks but not at 4 weeks. Application of chlorpyriphos-methyl/fenitrothion and neem oil every 2 weeks for 7 rounds resulted in dramatic reduction in larval density with no statistically significant differences. An adult survey after larviciding also showed no significant difference. The efficacy of crude neem oil appears to be below that of conventional larvicides

This study was conducted to investigate the preliminary environmental and mammalian toxicology of neem oil, temephos and chlorpyriphos-methyl/fenitrothion. Culex pipiens, Daphnia magna and Gambusia affinis were used to study environmental impact. A high level of toxicity was observed, with slight differences between organisms. The emulsifiers individually also displayed toxicity towards the tested organisms. Up to 90 days daily oral crude neem oil treatment [5 g/kg body weight] of laboratory mice did not cause any significant changes in weekly body weight gain, nor in serum liver damage indicators, direct bilirubin or total bilirubin. Blood parameters of treated mice up to 90 days were not statistically different from those of control mice. Neem oil could be used as an environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional chemical anopheline larvicides

RESUMO

Emulsifiable concentrates of DursbanR (chlorpyrifos) and Dowco 214 (chlorpyrifos-methyl) were tested as mosquito larvicides using Hudson knapsack sprayers on small plots of rice-fields on Penang Island. The mosquitoes found in these rice-fields are predominantly Anopheles campestris and Culex tritaeniorhynchus. At dosages of 14, 28 and 56 gm hectare-1, Dursban is effective in maintaining the rice-fields free of Anopheles larvae for at least 2, 3 and 7 days respectively. Dowco 214 at 56 gm hectare-1 is able to keep the fields free of all mosquito larvae for at least 2 days.
