RESUMO

Purpose: to compare the healing process of a defect of compact bone tissue after the implantation of osteoplastic materials based on ß-tricalcium phosphate ("ChronOS™" and "Calc-i-oss®"), which differ by manufacturer, geometrical shape and microscopic structure. Methods: the experiment was performed on 48 white male Wistar rats. In the middle third of the diaphysis of the femur we produced a perforated defect of 2.5 mm diameter in the medullary canal, which in the animals of the first group was filled with the osteoplastic material "ChronOS™" (block, Synthes, Switzerland), and in the animals of the second group with "Calc-i-oss®" (granules, «Degradable Solutions Dental¼, Switzerland). Fragments of the injured bones were studied on the 60th and 120th day by light microscopy with morphometry and by scanning electron microscopy. Results: it was found that regardless the geometric shape and the microscopic structure, both osteoplastic materials show high biocompatibility, osteoconductive properties, good integration with bone tissue of the regenerate, and that the microscopic structure of ß-tricalcium phosphate ("ChronOS™") may significantly affect the microscopic structure of bone tissue of the regenerate, which manifests itself in the specificity of its geometric shape. It was noticed that osteoplastic materials "ChronOS™" and "Calc-i-oss®" almost at the same rate were subjected to resorption and replacement by the bone tissue, the ratio of which was 22.55±1.25 to 77.45±1.25 and 25.72±2.06% to 74.28±2.06% on the 60th day of the experiment, and 17.65±1.09 to 82.35±1.09 and 18.31±1.54% to 81.69±1.54% on the 120th day.

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of the Chenopodium ambrosioides L (mastruz) extract for preventing bone loss and bone metabolism in ovariectomized rats. METHODS: Twelve rats were subjected to bilateral ovariectomy for inducing osteoporosis. After surgery, they were divided into two groups: Ovariectomy-control group (G1, n=6), receiving 0.5 ml distilled water by gavage for 30 days, and Ovariectomy plus mastruz group (G2, n=6), receiving 0.5 ml of the hydroalcoholic extract of mastruz at 10% concentration (50mg) daily, for the same period. Then, the blood of the animals was collected for further biochemical analysis (liver function) and tibia and liver were removed for histological and histomorphometric analyses. RESULTS: The cortical bone was significantly larger in the G2 than G1, whereas G1 presented the highest amount of adipocytes in the bone marrow (p<0.05). The blood levels of aspartate aminotransferase, triglycerides and cholesterol were significantly higher, whereas globulin and lactate dehydrogenase were smaller in G2 than G1. CONCLUSION: The hydroalcoholic extract of mastruz has effects on bone metabolism by changing blood proteins and enzymes and preventing both bone loss and the substitution of bone marrow cells by.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE@#To study the morphological characteristics of femurs of adult human and 11 kinds of adult animals from cattle, horses, pigs, goats, sheep, dogs, cats, rabbits, geese, ducks, chickens, and to establish an effective species identification method among various species.@*METHODS@#The 4 cm mid-diaphyseal segment of the femur from adult human (older than 20 years old) at autopsy was obtained. Addi-tionally, the 4 cm ones from 11 kinds of adult animals were obtained. After decalcification, all femurs were made into slices, and then were observed by optical microscope. The 25 indexes were selected and analyzed by step discriminant analysis according to differences between human and mammal, human and poultry, and human and 11 kinds of animals.@*RESULTS@#The histological structure of bone mineral density of middle part of femur had obvious characteristics among the species. And the morphology and number of osteon showed the trend of obvious biological evolution. There were 11 indexes with significant differences between human and 11 kinds of animals to establish some mathematical models to discriminate all species. The correct discrimination rate was 96.3% between human and mammal. The correct discrimination rate was up to 100% between human and poultry, and was 89.4% among human, mammal and poultry.@*CONCLUSION@#The mathematical models have good correct discrimination rate among human and the other animals, which could be applied in the practical species identification cases.

RESUMO

Osteoporosis is one of the major health problems afflicting our modern world, especially disuse osteoporosis. Reduction of mechanical stresses on bone could lead to osteoporosis. To study the role of Ca and vitamins D and K on the prevention of immobilization osteoporosis. The study included 30 adult male albino rats, They were divided into three groups. Group I [the control group] and group II were immobilized by casting their right lower limb for 4 weeks. Group III [the immobilization group that concomitantly received a dietary supplement] was further subdivided into four subgroups; subgroup IIIa was given Ca citrate, subgroup IIIb was given vitamin D [alfacalcidol], subgroup IIIc was given Ca and vitamin D, and subgroup IIId was given vitamin K during the same period of immobilization. The distal ends of the femur of the immobilized limb were taken, processed, and examined using scanning electron microscopy. Morphometric studies were carried out. The results showed significant thinning of both compact and cancellous bone on immobilization. Multiple cavities and cracks and widening of the Haversian canal were detected in the compact bone. Thin irregular spike-like bone traveculae and fracture were also seen in the cancellous bone trabeculae. Administration of either Ca [subgroup IIIa] or vitamin D [subgroup IIIb] with immobilization did not improve most of the previous results. Combined administration of both Ca and vitamin D [subgroup IIIc] improved cortical bone thickness but not the thickness of cancellous bone. Administration of vitamin K [subgroup IIId] with immobilization resulted in extensive branching and anastomosing bone trabeculae in the metaphysic. For the period of this experiment, vitamin K proved to be more effective as a protective agent compared with combined Ca and vitamin D administration in cases of immobilization osteoporosis

OBJECTIVE: An experimental in vitro study was carried out to evaluate the influence of cortical bone thickness on ultrasound propagation velocity. METHODS: Sixty bone plates were used, made from bovine femurs, with thickness ranging from 1 to 6 mm (10 of each). The ultrasound velocity measurements were performed using a device specially designed for this purpose, in an underwater acoustic tank and with direct contact using contact gel. The transducers were positioned in two ways: on opposite sides, with the bone between them, for the transverse measurement; and parallel to each other, on the same side of the bone plates, for the axial measurements. RESULTS: In the axial transmission mode, the ultrasound velocity speed increased with cortical bone thickness, regardless of the distance between the transducers, up to a thickness of 5 mm, then remained constant thereafter. There were no changes in velocity when the transverse measures were made. CONCLUSION: Ultrasound velocity increased with cortical bone thickness in the axial transmission mode, until the thickness surpasses the wavelength, after which point it remained constant. Level of Evidence: Experimental Study.
