RESUMO

Plants are the real basis towards animal life and are also central to people's livelihood. The contributions of the plants in performing varied religious celebrations and in other multiple beneficiaries like medicine, human happiness as well as in treating deadly diseases can never be neglected. In treating diseases, the plants and their constituents are better choice than any other synthetic chemical. The nature has been kind enough to provide the human beings with various types of medicinal plants and in the real sense these form the storehouse of curing almost all the ailments. Consequently, most of the drugs which are being used in preparing formulations have their origin and roots in the plants which form the chief natural source of medicines. Even in modern era, the plant-derived drugs are being extensively used, either in their original or semi-synthetic form. It is because their natural phytoconstituents are highly innocuous posing relatively fewer or no side effects. Based upon their observations, analysis and experience, our ancestors used many plants for medicinal purposes and thus their efforts need to be supported by scientific evidence. Jasminum grandiflorum Linn. is one of such important plants. It has been extensively used by the tribes all over India to treat different diseases which mainly include body pains, toothache, stomach ache, ulcers, and sexual impotency. Chemistry of the plant revealed the presence of mainly secoiridoids, terpenoids, flavonoids and tannins. Not much scientific support was given to the folklore claims for this plant but some of its traditional uses were investigated like spasmolytic, wound healing, antimicrobial, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, antiulcer and antioxidant activities. This article is the review of research works done on the plant Jasminum grandiflorum Linn. to date. As a part of it the local names, morphology, traditional claims, chemistry and pharmacological activities have been discussed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE@#To evaluate in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of methanolic extract of Jasminum humile (J. humile) leaves extract.@*METHOD@#Methanolic extract of J. humile was evaluated for its antimicrobial activity by using agar well diffusion method & their possible antioxidant assay by two complementary test systems, namely DPPH and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity. These various antioxidant activities were compared to standard antioxidants such as ascorbic acid for both the tests.@*RESULTS@#In the DPPH & hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity, the IC(50) value of methanol extract was 70.43 μg/mL & 60.79 μg/mL respectively. Further, the extract showed inhibitory activity for Gram-positive and negative bacteria at different concentrations. The maximum antibacterial activity of extract was exhibited against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) at concentration 50 mg/mL when compared with ciprofloxacin@*CONCLUSIONS@#These results clearly indicate that J. humile is effective in scavenging free radicals and has the potential to be a powerful antioxidant. Thus, the results obtained in the present study indicate that J. humile leaves extract could be considered as a potential source of natural antioxidants and that could be used as an effective source against bacterial diseases.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo analyze the major herbs in Qushi Huayu Compound (QHC) or its various assembles on the fatty deposition and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) secretion induced by free fatty acid (FFA) of human hepatic cancer cell line (HepG2) in vitro, for investigating the analytic methods in seeking the basic material in Chinese compound relevant to the pharmacological effect.

METHODSThe HepG2 cellular model of fatty deposition and TNF-alpha secretion induced by FFA and seropharmacological technique were adopted. Taking triglyceride (TG) and TNF-alpha inhibitory effect as the indexes of investigation, the effects of 10 combinations assembled by uniform design U1(11) (11(10)) form with drugs chosen from the five herbs in the QHC (oriental wormwood, cape-jasmine fruit, giant knotweed rhizome, Japanese St. John's wort herb and curcuma) were screened to seek the major herbs or optimal combination, which were then validated by grouping in interval.

RESULTSHigh dosage combination of oriental wormwood and Japanese St. John's wort herb remarkably reduced the TG and TNF-alpha content in the model cells, with the effect insignificantly different from the whole compound. Moreover, single use of oriental wormwood showed a similar effect.

CONCLUSIONOriental wormwood and its combination with Japanese St. John's wort herb are the major herb/optimum combination in QHC for inhibiting fatty deposition and TNF-alpha secretion in hepatic lipo-toxicity model. The major herb or optimal combination in a certain Chinese compound acted on some sticking point could be discovered by adopting uniform design and pharmacodynamics analytic technique.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To relieve stress and pain during labor is most important issue in obstetrical care. The purposes of this study were to verify the effects of aromatherapy on labor process, labor pain, labor stress response and neonatal status of primipara. METHODS: This study was a randomized, repeated measures over time, pretest-posttest design. The subjects were forty eight primipara with single gestation, full term, uncomplicated pregnancies. As the treatment, the experimental group took an aromatherapy massage with aromatherapy oil (1.5% dilution essential oil of clary sage, geranium, jasmine, and rose) on the back at every two hours. The control group took general obstetric care. Baseline data including general and obstetric characteristics, plasma beta-endorphin, serum cortisol were obtained at the onset of labor. As resulting variables, length of labor, use of oxytocin, labor pain, use of analgesics, plasma beta-endorphin, serum cortisol, pulse rate, blood pressure, umbilical cord arterial blood pH, Apgar score were measured. Collecting Data were analyzed by t-test, x2 test, repeated measures of ANOVA with SPSS program. RESULTS: As a results, the length of decerelation phase of the experimental group was significantly shorter than the control group. No significant group effects were found, but significant time effects were found for labor pain, plasma beta-endorphin, serum cortisol, pulse rate and blood pressure. There were no significant differences in other variables between two groups. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that aromatherapy during labor could be effective in decreasing labor length. But, any other effects of aromatherapy did not be verified.

RESUMO

Bee propolis ethanolic extract with some plant essential oils was investigated for its antidermatophytic properties. The tested plant essential oils included jasmine, clove, lemon, Arabian jasmine, mint, rosa, olive and basil. The antidermatophytic activity has been compared to Naftifine-HCl and Clotrimazole used for dermatophyte treatment. Experimental model has been tested using sheep hoof plate for the in vitro tests to stimulate human nails. Mint, clove and basil with 4 mg/ml of bee propolis have a comparable efficacy to those of Naftifine-HCl and Clotrimazole. There is a great necessity for new effective low price and safe antidermatophyte agents to avoid recurrent infection. Propolis synergistic could be of great importance with essential oils of plants in dermatophyte therapy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo study the absorption and separation of different glycoside on different macropore resins.

METHODTake baikal skullcap root, cape jasmine fruit and white peony root as samples and study the different characterstics of absorption and separation of these samples on macropore resins such as D101 and so on.

RESULTThe static absorption effect of the the three aglycones on six different macropore resins is baicalin > lactiflorin > gardoside. Their elution are 75% CH3OH, 25% CH3OH, and 45% CH3OH. Their elution rates are 60%, 93%, and 93%.

CONCLUSIONSimilar molecules may not have similar absorption abilities on same macropore resins, but the effect of absorption has something to do with the structures of the molecules, the more double-bonds the molecules have, the greater the absorption force the resins have.
