RESUMO

Whereas certain oral antifungal azoles are well documented to have activity against lieshmaniasis, data on the efficacy of fluconazole for leishmaniasis are limited. We conducted a controlled trial in Aleppo-Syria of Fluconazole for the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis [CL] caused by lieshmania tropica. The trial included 79 patients who were randomly assigned to treatment with either Fluconazole 200 mg or placebo daily for 6 weeks. Complete follow-up data where available for 46 patients [264 lesions] in the Fluconazole group and 19 patients [102 lesions] in the placebo group. Results were as follows in the Fluconazole group:-75 [28.4%] lesions had complete recovery-103 [39%] lesions had improvement in diameter and infiltration-86 [32.6%] lesions had no response Whereas in the placebo group:-10 [9.8%] lesions had complete recovery-44 [43.1%] lesions had improvement in diameter and infiltration-48 [47.1%] lesions had no response Side effects were mild and similar in both groups A six weeks course of Fluconazole is a safe and useful in the treatment of CL caused by L. tropica

RESUMO

This paper presented a son and his mother with positive leishmaniasis IHAT [1/128 and 1/1924, respectively]. Using enzymatic electrophoresis characterization, the two isolates proved to be Leishmania tropica that causes anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis [ACL]. The son had two large ulcerative ACL on his left hand. The mother had a large ulceration and progressive erosion of the soft tissue [the right cheek and right eye] and the cartilage of the nose disfigured and debilitated her face. The histopathological examination of the biopsy material obtained from the mother, but not the material from her son, showed typical pathological picture of the basal cell carcinoma

RESUMO

Swiss strain albino mice were inoculated intradermally in a shaved area above the tail with Leishmania tropica strain. The dissemination of the parasites to various organs and distant cutaneous sites was followed up to 16 weeks. The infection was detected in the metastatic foci by examination of impression smears, inoculated culture tubes containing Tanabe's medium with specimen obtained from lesions and by histopathological changes. It was found that the parasite disseminated from the site of inoculation to visceral organs; namely, the liver, spleen, kidney and lung. However, no invasion of the testis was observed throughout the experiment. Metastatic cutaneous lesions occurred late in the infection and was observed only in 2 animals. Cutaneous metastatic lesions developed exclusively on the tail and the face

RESUMO

Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis [MCL] which is called Espundia, and Uta is confined to South and Central America. In this form of leishmaniasis, the reticulo-endothelial system of the mucous membrane of the mouth, nose and throat is parasitized. It causes chronic ulceration of the mucous membranes with destruction of the bone and cartilage of the nose and mouth. In this study, 2 cases of mucosal leishmaniasis were recorded in 2 boys. In one patient, a primary lesion was identified on the patient's neck. In the second patient, no lesion or scar of old lesion or even history of leishmaniasis was reported. The causative agent was typed biochemically and proved to be Leishmania tropica. It was concluded that the mucosal leishmaniasis caused by L. tropica may be a lymphatic extension of a primary lesion or metastatic through the sand fly or even due to other factors of genetic or immunologic cause[s]
