In fish farmings, diseases can be reduced by using immunostimulants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunostimulant potential of Mentha piperita in tambaqui fed with 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% of oil per kg of commercial fish feed. The fish were inoculated with Aeromonas hydrophila to challenge them. Hematological and biochemical parameters were determined after 30 days of feeding and seven days after the challenge. There was no mortality and M. piperita oil did not influence fish production parameters. However, blood hemoglobin concentration (Hb) increased in the fish fed with 0.5 and 1.5% of oil per kg of diet; albumin increased in those fed with 1.0%; cholesterol increased in all groups with oil; and triglycerides increased in those fed with 0.5%. After the bacterial challenge, the fish showed decreases in Hb when fed with diet enriched with 1.5% oil per kg of diet, in mean corpuscular volume with 1.0% and in mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration with 0 and 1.5%. Protein levels increased in groups with 0 and 1.5% of oil and albumin when fed with 0 and 1.0%; cholesterol levels increased in the control group; and high levels of triglycerides were observed in the groups with 0, 0.5 and 1.5%. Thus, M. piperita essential oil promoted hematological alterations in tambaqui and can be recommended in diets containing up to 1.0% per kg, because of the minimal physiological modifications caused. However, additional studies are necessary to obtain more information regarding to the physiological effects of this immunostimulant.


Em pisciculturas, doenças podem ser minimizadas com o uso de imunoestimulantes. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o potencial imunoestimulante do óleo essencial de Mentha piperita na dieta de tambaqui com dietas contendo 0; 0,5; 1,0; 1,5% de inclusão do óleo por kg de ração comercial para peixes. Os tambaquis foram desafiados com a bactéria Aeromonas hydrophila. Hematologia e bioquímica dos tambaquis foram determinados após 30 dias de alimentação e sete dias do desafio. Não houve mortalidade dos peixes durante o experimento, sendo que o óleo não influenciou os parâmetros produtivos dos peixes. Entretanto, a concentração de hemoglobina (Hb) aumentou em peixes alimentados com 0,5 e 1,5% de óleo por kg de dieta; a albumina aumentou em 1,0%; o colesterol aumentou em todos os grupos com óleo; e triglicérides em 0,5% por kg de dieta. Após desafio bacteriano ocorreram diminuições da Hb nos peixes alimentados com 1,5% de óleo; do volume corpuscular médio com 1,0%; e da concentração de hemoglobina corpuscular média com 0 e 1,5%. Níveis aumentados de proteína nos grupos 0 e 1,5%; da albumina em 0 e 1,0%; do colesterol no controle; e dos triglicérides em 0, 0,5 e 1,5% de óleo na dieta. Assim o óleo essencial de M. piperita na dieta promoveu alterações hematológicas e pode ser recomendado seu uso em inclusões de até 1,0% por kg da dieta de tambaqui, devido às mínimas alterações fisiológicas causadas. Entretanto, estudos adicionais são necessários, de modo a obter informações sobre os efeitos fisiológicos deste imunoestimulante.

A preclinical pharmacological study was conducted to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of Mentha piperita L. against paracetamol induced toxicity. Adult male NMRI mice who were administered orally soft plant extracts in doses of 200mg/kg and 400mg/kg, three consecutive days prior to the induction of hepatotoxicity were used. Clinical signs of toxicity, hepatic biochemical parameters and morphological analysis of the liver was evaluated. The biochemical parameters analyzed showed significant differences, but none of the two groups showed a similar untreated control group behavior. No macroscopic changes in the liver were confirmed. Microscopically, the study groups with Mentha piperita L. showed mild to moderate damage with significant differences from the untreated control group. The evaluation of hepatoprotective potential on the M. piperita L. extract at doses studied did not behave as hepatoprotective agent...


Se realizó un estudio farmacológico preclínico para evaluar el efecto hepatoprotector de Mentha piperita L. frente a la toxicidad inducida por el paracetamol. Se emplearon ratones adultos machos NMRI a los que se administró por vía oral extractos blandos de la planta a dosis de 200 mg/kg y 400 mg/kg, tres días consecutivos previos a la inducción de la hepatotoxicidad. Se evaluaron los signos clínicos de toxicidad, parámetros bioquímicos hepáticos y el análisis morfológico del hígado. Los parámetros bioquímicos analizados mostraron diferencias altamente significativas, pero ninguno de los dos grupos presentaron un comportamiento similar al grupo control no tratado. No se confirmaron alteraciones macroscópicas del hígado. A nivel Microscópico, los grupos en estudio con Mentha piperita L. presentaron daños de leves a moderados con diferencias significativas respecto al grupo control no tratado. Se puede afirmar que según la evaluación del potencial hepatoprotector del extracto de M. piperita L. a las dosis estudiadas no se comportó como agente hepatoprotector...

Volatiles from aqueous extract of peppermint commercial sachets were investigated through gas chromatography/flame ionization detection (GC/FID) and GC/mass spectrometry (MS). Samples were prepared under similar conditions as in homemade tea. Volatiles were isolated using solid phase extraction method (SPE) with Porapak Q trap followed by desorption with acetone. Estimated mean values for short and medium chain carboxylic acids (C2- C12) and ketones lay in the range of 50-64 μg kg-1 whilst aliphatic alcohols and acyclic hydrocarbons had values lower than 6 μg kg-1. The major volatiles were terpenes (275-382 μg kg-1) that reached 89 % of the total composition. A total of 16 compounds, among them dodecane, acetoin, acetol, citral, geraniol and octanoic acid have been described by the first time in peppermint tea. These findings could be attributed to the different analytical approach employed, mainly to the use of different extraction/pre-concentration techniques. Given the apparently lower proportion of terpenes in the aqueous extract it may be that the chemical properties of the peppermint essential oil are not entirely reproduced with homemade tea.


Estudo da composição da fração volátil do extrato aquoso de sachês de hortelã pimenta (Mentha piperita L.) através da extração em fase sólida. O princípio desse trabalho foi investigar a fração volátil do extrato aquoso de sachês comerciais de hortelã pimenta usando cromatografia gasosa com detectores de ionização em chama e de massas. As amostras foram preparadas em condições similares às usadas para o preparo do chá caseiro. Os compostos voláteis foram isolados via método de extração em fase sólida com adsorvente Porapak Q e eluídos com acetona. Uma estimativa dos valores médios dos ácidos carboxílicos de cadeias média e curta ficou na faixa de 50-64 μg kg-1, enquanto alcoóis alifáticos e hidrocarbonetos acíclicos tiveram valores menores do que 6 μg kg-1. Os terpenos (275-382 μg kg-1) foram os compostos majoritários alcançando 89 % dos sólidos totais. Um total de 16 compostos voláteis, entre eles, dodecano, acetoína, acetol, citral, geraniol e ácido octanóico foram descritos pela primeira vez no chá de hortelã pimenta. Esses resultados poderiam ser atribuídos aos diferentes métodos analíticos empregados, principalmente devido ao uso de diferentes técnicas de extração e pré-concentração. Em função da proporção menor de terpenos no extrato aquoso é razoável especular que as propriedades químicas do óleo essencial da hortelã pimenta não sejam totalmente reproduzidas com o consumo do chá caseiro.

Although antibiotics are used in conventional treatment of infectious diseases, a lot of unexpected side effects along with resistance to antibiotics appear. Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita are plants found abundantly in most parts of Iran. In the present study, we extracted and identified the chemical compounds of the essential oils of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita. Moreover, the anti-oxidative property, free radical scavenging capacity, and antimicrobial activities of the essential oils of these plants were studied. This study was conducted in the Biotechnology Department laboratories, Agricultural Faculty of Avicina University, Hamadan, Iran, in 2009. The aerial parts of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita were harvested in summer, when the plants were in their full blooming stage and dried in the shade. The essential oil of the aerial parts was extracted by hydrodistillation and was analyzed by capillary GC and GC/MS method. The micro-organisms employed in this study were: E. coli, S. aureus, S. enteritidis, L. monocytogenes. By employing disc diffusion and tube dilution methods, antimicrobial effects of the oils were studied. Antioxidative property, free radical scavenging capacity, and antimicrobial activities of the oils were also studied. Chemical analysis of the extracts resulted in the identification of 28 and 37 compounds in the essential oils of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita respectively. The sensitivity of the bacteria to the oils in order of decreasing the sensitivity was L. monocytogenes, E. coli, S. aureus, and S. enteritidis. The antibacterial properties of the essential oil from Mentha piperita leaves were higher than the oil of Salvia officinalis leaves. Also inhibitions zones of microbial growth were not correlated with the microbicidal kinetics of the oils. This study showed that the herbal essences of Salvia officinalis and Mentha piperita are very active against E. coli, S. aureus, S. enteritidis and L. monocytogenes

Oral administration of M. piperita (1 g/kg body weight/day) before exposure to gamma radiation was found to be effective in protecting against the chromosomal damage in bone marrow of Swiss albino mice. Animals exposed to 8 Gy gamma radiation showed chromosomal aberrations in the form of chromatid breaks, chromosome breaks, centric rings, dicentrics, exchanges and acentric fragments. There was a significant increase in the frequency of aberrant cells at 6 hr after irradiation. Maximum aberrant cells were observed at 12 hr post-irradiation autopsy time. Further, the frequency of aberrant cells showed decline at late post-irradiation autopsy time. However, in the animals pretreated with Mentha extract, there was a significant decrease in the frequency of aberrant cells as compared to the irradiated control. Also significant increase in percentage of chromatid breaks, chromosome breaks, centric rings, dicentrics, exchanges, acentric fragments, total aberrations and aberrations/damaged cell was observed at 12 hr post-irradiation autopsy time in control animals, whereas Mentha pretreated irradiated animals showed a significant decrease in percentage of such aberrations. A significant decrease in GSH content and increase in LPO level was observed in control animals, whereas Mentha pretreated irradiated animals exhibited a significant increase in GSH content and decrease in LPO level but the values remained below the normal. The radioprotective effect of Mentha was also demonstrated by determining the LD(50/30) values (DRF = 1.78). The results from the present study suggest that Mentha pretreatment provides protection against radiation induced chromosomal damage in bone marrow of Swiss albino mice.
