Integrative and Complementary Practices (PICs) are presented as supporting methods, helping to achieve success in certain clinical and/or surgical treatments, acting in prevention, assisting in healing and psychosomatic balance in order to reestablish agreement between mind and body. . The Federal Council of Dentistry (CFO) has regulated practices such as acupuncture, hypnosis, floral therapy and herbal medicine, however, their applicability depends on the issuance of a license and its proper registration with the Council (Resolution CFO 82/2008). For Dentistry, PICs provide new tools to provide comprehensive care to human beings. In this work, we propose to review the literature on PICs and Dentistry. This literature review was carried out by searching articles in the Scielo, PubMed and Scholar Google databases from 2000 to 2021. Articles were found on the following PICs working together with Dentistry: floral therapies, acupuncture, hypnodontics, ozone therapy , laser therapy, phytotherapy, homeopathy and anthroposophic dentistry. These practices are of great value, as they promote well-being without causing harm to the individual, presenting few or no side effects, allowing greater safety for patients, in addition to favoring the relationship between patient and dentist, optimizing working time in the dental office and reducing costs.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: In recent years, aesthetic dentistry has become a major focus for the public. Facial attractiveness plays a key role on modern society and the creation of harmonious smile is an aim for every dentist. The objective of this study was to define certain values of the inter-incisive index in Bulgarians, the sexual dimorphism and bilateral asymmetry and to verify differences of this index between Bulgarians and other Balkan populations. The present study included 121 males and 111 females of Bulgarian origin aged 20- 40 years. Mesiodistal dimensions of maxillary central and lateral incisors were measured by Dentistry Sliding Vernier Caliper. We used the technique of direct anthropometry, modified by Prof. Y. Yordanov. We calculated the inter-incisive index as ratio of the mesiodistal dimension of maxillary lateral incisor to the mesiodistal dimension of the maxillary central incisor. The measurements were analyzed with SPSS 23. The level of statistical significance was set at P< 0.05. The inter-incisive index showed no statistically significant differences between left and right side of the dental arch in both sexes. We did not find statistically significant differences between males and females as well. On the other hand, we found statistically significant differences in MD values of incisors between Bulgarians and other Balkan nations. Inter-incisive index shows no sexual dimorphism and bilateral asymmetry in Bulgarians. This can be helpful in aesthetic dentistry, in prosthodontics and in orthodontic treatment planning.

ABSTRACT Orthodontics is concerned with the early correction of malocclusion; this speciality prioritizes the harmony of the bony bases in relation to the discrepancy and dental positioning, aspects that can be corrected at any time of life. For these reasons, it is of great importance to know the growth peak. The current trend in Orthodontics, in the evaluation of skeletal maturation, is to reduce the number of radiographs to those strictly necessary; that is why there are a number of researchers who have developed skeletal maturation indices with the profiles of the cervical vertebral bodies. These generally appear on lateral skull teleradiographs, and are used for orthodontic diagnosis, which favours the elimination of additional radiographs. It is recommended to use the method of skeletal maturation evaluation through the cervical vertebrae in Cuban orthodontic services.

SUMMARY Implantology is a branch in constant evolution, presenting every time faster, more predictable and minimally invasive techniques; nowadays it is a very complete solution for those persons that, for any reason, have lost one or more teeth, and has meant great advances in odontology. Scientific and technological advances, and also the improvement of surgical praxis, have made the success rate of dental grafts higher than 95 % after a year of being made. It is known that failure percentage is relatively low. A bibliographic review was carried out with the aim of updating the importance of implantology, its causes and complications (AU).

SUMMARY: The study was conducted in 40 undergraduate students of both sexes, who were in the 2nd year of the 2017 year enrolled in the Undergraduate Dentistry Program of the Universidad de La Frontera. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of a Clinical Hand Washing technique (CML), demonstrating the degree of efficiency and implementing improvement behaviors of the technique using Bioluminescence. This technique allows a rapid quantitative measurement of organic residues on a surface by quantifying the amount of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). For that purpose, a Luminometer, 3M™ Clean-Trace™, was used to obtain the contamination level in two key points, Interdigital Region and Hyponychium, of both hands by quantification of Relative Light Units (URL). Hand contamination prior to CML and after the development of the technique was tested in the Interdigital and Hyponychium regions of both hands, through surface ATP swab considering as Approved <250 URL and Rejected > 251 URL. Also, the level of contamination v/s sex, and approval/rejection distribution before and after the CML were tested. The approval/rejection range for pre-CML sampling at all selected locations was 35-42.5 % / 57.5-65 %, fin ding the highest contamination rate in Hyponychium in both hands. After performing the CML we obtained 90 % of approval in all sites, with a 10 % rejection rate; the highest percentage was surveyed on left hand Hyponychium. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics for Windows, a descriptive analysis, test t-test for independent samples, test of homogeneity of Levene variances. A p value <0.05 was established for statistical significance. There were significant differences in analysis of the mean value, according to sampling zones and URL approval / rejection ranges, ranging from p = 0.000 to p = 0.015 (Interdigital region of left hand, post-LA TÉCNICA DE LMC). The left hand presented greater contamination in both swab areas both before and after the execution of CML. The most contaminated region was the Hyponychium, which was paradoxical, because the technique emphasizes the hygiene of this location and has better access and contact with soap and water.

Background: Sometimes gingival retractions are associated with high muscular tensional forces and shallow vestibules. Such retractions cause periodontal problems to patients due to the cleaning access limitations. Edlan Mejchar vestibuloplasty technique allows controlling, in one intervention and a single surgical field, etiological factors and a creeping gingival attachment by eliminating tensional forces. Purpose: To describe the effectiveness of Edlan Mejchar technique to solve gum retractions caused by tensional forces in four clinical cases. Description of cases: Four patients with gingival retractions in lower incisors and little adhered gingiva due to lower lip frenulum tension seek dental treatment. Edlan Mejchar vestibuloplasty was the surgical treatment chosen, which consisted of supraperiosteal incisions and internal dissections in connective tissue. Results: The percentage of root coverage achieved was close to 60 % and abnormal frenulum insertions were eliminated. Conclusion: Vestibuloplasty through Edlan Mejchar technique showed favorable results in the cases described in which the labial frenum exerted tensional forces on the periodontium of lower anterior teeth.

RESUMO

Have dentists paused to think as to where the gloves, fixer, plastic waste, mercury waste, and X-ray films used in the clinic end up after disposal? Or considered how much water, electricity, and other resources our dental clinics use? Dentists need to take off their tinted glasses and consider the effects of their dental practice on the planet. Though individual dentists generate only small amounts of dental waste, the accumulated waste produced by the profession may have significant environmental impact. Thus the concept of “green dentistry” or “ecofriendly dentistry” has evolved. Eco-friendly dentistry is an environmentally friendly way of practicing dentistry by using techniques and equipment to reduce waste, conserve energy, decrease pollution, and reduce our carbon footprint. The incorporation of eco-friendly dentistry to the dental practice is not only effective from an environmental perspective but is cost-effective for the dentist too. If a dental practitioner is looking for a way to distinguish his clinic from the others, eco-friendly dentistry could be the answer. This article reviews the scientific literature on eco-friendly dentistry and suggests comprehensive steps to start an eco-friendly dental practice.

RESUMO

Aim: The purpose of this paper was to review various dosimeters used in dentistry and the cumulative results of various studies done with various dosimeters. Materials and Methods: Several relevant PubMed indexed articles from 1999 to 2013 were electronically searched by typing “dosimeters”, “dosimeters in dentistry”, “properties of dosimeters”, “thermoluminescent and optically stimulated dosimeters”, “recent advancements in dosimetry in dentistry.” The searches were limited to articles in English to prepare a concise review on dental dosimetry. Titles and abstracts were screened, and articles that fulfilled the criteria of use of dosimeters in dental applications were selected for a full‑text reading. Article was divided into four groups: (1) Biological effects of radiation, (2) properties of dosimeters, (3) types of dosimeters and (4) results of various studies using different dosimeters. Conclusion: The present review on dosimetry based on various studies done with dosimeters revealed that, with the advent of radiographic technique the effective dose delivered is low. Therefore, selection of radiological technique plays an important role in dental dose delivery.

RESUMO

The science and art of markings of the skin especially hands and feet’s is known as dermatoglyphics, where derma means skin and glyph mean carving. For centuries, the features of the hands have fascinated scholars, sages, theologians, doctors, and layman alike. In 1926 Cummins introduced the term “dermatoglyphics.” “Samudra Shastra” was known as ridge pattern study in ancient India. The epidermal ridge patterns were classified into “Chakra, Shankya, and Padma” which corresponds with the whorl, loop, and arch system of modern classification. All individuals have unique fingerprints which remain unchanged over the lifetime. Multiple genes determine fingerprint configurations and the study of fingerprints reveal vital genetic and medical information about an individual. Dermatoglyphics is considered as the window of congenital abnormalities and is a sensitive indicator of intrauterine anomalies. For preliminary investigations in conditions with a suspected genetic basis dermatoglyphic analysis is now beginning to prove itself as an extremely useful tool. In dentistry, various studies have been published on the dermatoglyphics. Here in this present review, the dermatoglyphic patterns of the palms and soles, the methods to record the palm and sole prints and various studies conducted among the dental disorders has been highlighted.

RESUMO

Hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder characterized by the triad of features such as nail dystrophy, generalized hypotrichosis, and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis. Physical development and life expectancy are not affected. Dermatoglyphics and ameloglyphics have been considered as casement of congenital abnormalities and other conditions. Young adults and children with hidrotic ED need to be evaluated early by a dentist to determine the oral outcome. Stipulated, appropriate care needs to be provided throughout the child’s growth to maintain oral function. According to this study ameloglyphics was found to be beneficial over dermatoglyphics in timely diagnosis and treatment planning.

The training of health professionals is still far from the principles and guidelines of the Unified Health System (SUS). Proposals published by the National Curricular Guidelines (DCN) for the dentistry course in 2002, aim to fill this gap through the articulation between Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and SUS. It is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study on the direction of activities in the SUS practice settings, in the course of the students' perspective of dentistry of a private institution located in São Paulo, in the light of DCN and the political pedagogical project (PPP) of that course. The survey took place on the Facebook social networking site in secret discussion groups with 10 students, using open questions related to dentistry, SUS and graduation, between November 2014 and July 2015. During the process, it was discovered that 8 students working in SUS as assistants and technicians of oral health and a nursing assistant,

a fact that influenced the construction and conduct of questions. The opinions of students, the PPP IES study and document the DCN were analyzed using concept maps (designed by Novak and Cañas), and then validated, respectively, by the students, the dentistry course coordinator studied, and the representative of the Association of Dental Education (ABENO). To deepen the analysis of the different experiences and points of view, we used the technique of thematic content analysis Bardin. The discussion of the results showed that besides being can occur pedagogical practices in SUS practice settings, it is also likely learning skills and abilities described by DCN. The transformative potential of these practice settings enabled, this research, to propose strategies for carrying out activities in the SUS aligned with DCN.

The purpose of this paper was to report prescribed oral care in the medical records of hos pitalized patients from Pronto Socorro Municipal Mario Pinotti Hospital. The methodology consists of evaluating the medical records of patients who were hospitalized for at least 24 hours assuming that every patient should have received oral hygiene regardless of their physical and motor conditions. According to the 415 analyzed records, oral hygiene was prescribed for just 28.19% of patients (117). Regarding hospitalization, the majority of patients (52.29% - 217) had a period of hospitalization between over 2 days and 7 days and most of them were male (56,63% - 235). The most frequent reasons for hospitalization were: bacterial diseases 4.34% (18 patients), pneumonia / flu symptoms 7.23% (30 patients), appendectomy 11.33% (47 patients); trauma 16.14% (67 patients); stroke 18.55% (77 patients) and others reasons represented 42,41% (176 patients). Data suggests that there is not much importance placed on oral care in hospitais for hospitalized patients, since most of them received no required care for ora hygiene.

RESUMO

Ultrasound (US), traditionally a diagnostic modality, and is emerging as a non-invasive therapy using local drug delivery and gene therapy. US exposure gene rates bio eff ects that result in shear stress, tissue heating, and cavitation eff ects, which are used in therapeutic applications. Sonoporation employs these eff ects to enhance delivery of large molecules such as DNA into the cells which is applied to muscle, head and neck tumor, in a cell disruption process called transformation and increases the permeability to bioactive materials, which is usually used in molecular biology and gene therapy. Nevertheless, it has recently become popular as a technique to enhance drug release from drug delivery systems. Th is review presents the main fi ndings in the fi eld of sonoporation, namely drug delivery, gene delivery and DNA transfer and its applications in dentistry.

The crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous Linnaeus, 1766) are animals widely found in South American countries. Although it is not an endangered species, it is possible that many of them suffer impacts from being hit by car on the highways of the country, and this is the reason why it is one of the carnivores' species with high frequency of deaths. 32 free living sincranium stored in the osteological collection in the Laboratory of Veterinary Anatomy of Vila Velha University (Vila Velha/ES) were studied in order to diagnose diseases suffered by these individuals while alive. The main lesions identified were: crowding, no dental, dental calculus, tertiary dentin, detrition, darkening tooth, exposure of pulp, bone fenestration, fractured tooth, enamel fracture, giroversion, pigmentation and resorption of the alveolar crest. The most common findings were: no dental, dental detrition and fractured tooth. No dental before death, bone changes, dental calculus, crowding and giroversion apparently did not cause any harm to the animals while alive.
