RESUMO

Thyroid carcinogenesis is accompanied by loss of thyroid-specific functions and refractory to radioiodine and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression therapy. Redifferentiating agents have been shown to inhibit tumor growth and improve the response to conventional therapy. Polyphenol phytochemicals (PPs) in fruits and vegetables have been reported to inhibit cancer initiation, promotion, progression and induce redifferentiation in selected types. In this study we examined PPs induce redifferentiation in thyroid cancer cell lines. We investigated the effects of genistein, resveratrol, quercetin, kaempferol, and resorcinol on the F9 embryonal carcinoma cell differentiation model. The thyroid cancer cell lines, TPC-1, FTC-133, NPA, FRO, and ARO, displayed growth inhibition in response to genistein, resveratrol, quercetin. We further demonstrated that genistein decreased the dedifferention marker CD97 in NPA cells and resveratrol decreased CD97 in FTC-133, NPA, FRO cells and quercetin decreased CD97 in all cell lines. We observed increased expression of differentiation marker NIS in FTC-133 cells in response to genistein, and resveratrol but no change in NPA, FRO, ARO cells. Quercetin increased or induced NIS in FTC-133, NPA, FRO cells. These findings suggest that PPs may provide a useful therapeutic intervention in thyroid cancer redifferentiation therapy.

RESUMO

The wide range of pharmacological activities of chromones as stimulants [1], diuretic[2], antibiotics[3] and anticancer [4] agents have stimulated recent interest in the synthesis of derivatives of this ring system. Claisen condensation of 2,4-diacetyl resorcinol with diethylmalonate in the presence of piperidine gave 2,4-bis-[l,3- dioxo-butanyl] resorcinol [1]. The IR spectrum of [1] showed absorption bands at 1660-1635 cm[-1] [upsilon CO, ketone] and 3400-3180 cm[-1] [upsilon OH, br.]. The [1]H NMR spectrum of [1] exhibited signals at b 2.0 - 2.9 [sxs, 6 H, 2 CH3], 6.1 [s, 4H, 2 CH[2] 6.4 [s, 2H, olefinic protons] 7.5-7.7 [2s, 2 H, non-equivalent Ar-H] and 11.3 [s, 2H, 2 OH phenolic]

RESUMO

This study was conducted on six rabbits, six rats and six human permanent teeth to evaluate histologically the effect of resin resorcinol in the periapical areas, the bacteriological aspect of the resin and the penetration of resin in the dentinal tubules. After 12 days period of observation plenty of lymphocytes and macrophages were evident along with granulomas which are suggestive of the tendency of the resin to stay longer. It was observed that the resin penetrate approximately three fourth distance inside the dentinal tubules. In the last phase the resin was found to be effective against the eight commonly found micro organisms. Though the histological results indicated that the periapical tissue would take longer time for complete repair, yet clinically the tooth functions well. Resinifying therapy is effective and economical method in root canal treatment.
