Plantar warts are a type of infection caused by the human papillomavirus. In many cases they are very painful and difficult to treat, they usually disappear in a few months with the treatment but in several cases they will persist for years. The case of a 13 years old male is presented, who came to the pharmacy after a long and unsuccessful conventional treatment of a plantar wart on the heel of the left foot. The plantar warts have been successfully treated by homeopathic medicines in the bibliography and according to our own experience. The chosen medicines were Thuja occidentalis 15CH (10 granules weekly), Dulcamara 9CH 5 (5-0-5), Antimonium crudum 15CH (5-0-5) and Nitricum acidum 15CH (5-0-5). An important improvement was observed after 1 month of treatment. The homeopathic treatment can be an effective treatment option for plantar warts, including those where other conventional interventions have not succeeded. (AU)

RESUMO

Background: In spite of the availability of multiple treatment options, viral warts are known for their persistence and recurrence, causing frustration to patients and treating physicians. Aims: To study the effectiveness and safety of autoinoculation as a treatment modality in cutaneous warts. Methods: A double‑blind, placebo‑controlled study was carried out. In the treatment group, full‑thickness warty tissue was excised, minced and implanted in a small dermal pocket. In the control group, warty tissue was only excised and not implanted, though a dermal pocket was made. Patients were evaluated every four weeks with lesion counts. The procedure was repeated at 4 and 8 weeks. Response was assessed at each visit and at 12 weeks. Results: Forty‑eight patients with cutaneous warts (male: female = 32:16) were randomized into autoinoculation and control groups. The number of warts at baseline was comparable in both groups (P = 0.293). Reduction in the number of warts was significantly more in the autoinoculation group (8.50 ± 13.88) than in the control group (10.04 ± 5.80) from 8 weeks onwards (P = 0.010). Complete resolution occurred only in the autoinoculation group, in 62.5% of cases. Adverse effects were seen in 11 patients, including infection of the donor site (5 cases), keloid formation (3) and hypopigmentation (3). Conclusion: Autoinoculation may be an effective therapeutic modality for cutaneous warts and two sessions may be required for optimum results.

Interferons constitute a family of naturally occurring proteins and glycoproteins that can be artificially produced by recombinant biotechnology. They have antiproliferative, antiviral and immunomodulatory properties that make them useful for several treatments. At present, these molecules are widely used in clinical practice for the treatment of various diseases as hepatitis C and B, leukemias, T cell cutaneous lymphoma, melanoma, multiple myeloma, etc. However, in dermatology, its use for intralesional treatment of either vulgar inaccessible or with low response to conventional treatments warts, is poorly reported in the literature. Over the past 23 years we have applied interferon therapy with highly promising results. In this article, we present 3 of our patients with the iconographic monitoring of treated warts...

Various viruses can infect the skin and the mucous membranes of human beings, manifesting itself in different diseases, according to age, gender and immune status. An important group has the ability to replicate in epithelial cells, causing clinical manifestations which evidenced the cell destruction either infected tissue hyperplasia. Much of these viruses persist in cells infected by years and have the ability to reactivate and again express cutaneous or mucosal diseases. In some cases, it is only asymptomatically shred in secretions that are a source of infection. In recent years, advances in molecular techniques have allowed to have increasingly sensitive, specific and rapid diagnostic methodologies. As well as, the progress in the area of vaccines and antivirals also gives us greater prophylactic and therapeutic tools.

RESUMO

To determine the prevalence of oral warts among children attending missionary dental clinic in Cameroon. This prospective study of children presenting in the Dental Clinic of Cameroon Baptist Convention with oral warts was conducted between January 2006 and August 2010. During the study period; 31 children out of 2912 children had oral warts giving a prevalence rate of 1.1. Out of which; 15 (48.4) of children with oral warts were aged between 7-10 years old; 20 (64.5) were females; 3 (9.7) were HIV positive. Lips were the most predominant oral site among the children. The recurrence rate following treatment with electrocautery was 1 (3.2). The overall prevalence of oral warts among Cameroonian children in a dental clinic setting was low. It was commoner in children aged 7-10 years; females and HIV negative children. Lips were the most predominant oral site in children and recurrence rate following treatment with electrocautery was low

RESUMO

To assess the effectiveness of the Bacille Calmette-Guerin [BCG] vaccine in the treatment of viral warts. A single blind placebo controlled study conducted at the Department of Dermatology; Baghdad Teaching Hospital, Baghdad, Iraq from March 2005 to June 2006. Two hundred patients with viral warts were enrolled in this study, and were fully assessed before therapy. The patients were divided into 2 equal matched groups. Group 1 was designed as the treatment group and received BCG vaccine in 1-3 doses with a one-month interval, while group 2 was injected with distilled water. The patients were evaluated every 2 weeks for evidence of regression of lesions. The follow up period lasted for 3 months after the last dose. A total of 154 patients completed the study: 81 patients in group I and 73 patients in group II. Thirty [39.7%] patients out of 81 patients in group I showed complete recovery. These results were significantly high [p<0.05] when compared with total response, 10 [13.7%] out of 73 patients in group II. No recurrence has been reported during the follow up period. When cases that failed to respond to placebo were treated with BCG in a similar manner to group I, there was total response in 15 [42.7%] out of 44 patients. No side effects were observed. The BCG vaccine was an effective and safe modality of treatment of viral warts

The identification and treatment of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and HPV-associated neoplasm are complex. Difficulties in diagnosis and treatment of HPV-associated diseases arise from inabilities to detect HPV efficiently, the lack of specific antiviral drugs active against HPV and the high rates of recurrence and persistence of HPV infections after treatment. We present a review of therapies for HPV infections.
