ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION:

The poor glycemic control among DM2 patients is still very high. On average, over 60% of patients have high levels of HbA1c, increasing the risk of complications associated with diabetes.

OBJECTIVE:

This study aimed to identify the determinants of inadequate glycemic control in DM2 patients in Brazil and Venezuela.

METHODS:

A cross sectional study was carried out with patients ≥ 18 years, of both sexes, previously diagnosed with DM2 attended at health centers in Brazil and Venezuela. Through individual interviews, sociodemographic, clinical and behavioral data were collected. The measurement of HbA1c was performed in all patients, and those with HbA1c > 7 were considered to have inadequate glycemic control. In order to identify possible factors associated with high levels of HbA1c multivariate linear regression models with backward were used.

RESULTS:

9418 patients with DM2 were evaluated, with 5692 patients from Brazil and 3726 from Venezuela. Among the total population studied, more than 60%...
