Para poder salvar la vida del paciente y parar la transmisión de Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) a otros pacientes y a los trabajadores de salud es importante diagnosticar tuberculosis pulmonar de la manera más rápida posible. Por la epidemia global del virus de inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH), la disponibilidad de nuevos tratamientos de inmunosupresión para enfermedades como artritis reumatoide, y la emergencia de cepas de tuberculosis resistentes a los antifímicos, un diagnóstico rápido es más importante que nunca.
