ABSTRACT
Since it according to a gender stereotype that is binary, voice can constitute at the same time a limitation and an instrument of is classified affirmation towards the pursuit of social acknowledgement for trans people, particularly for those whose voices do not conform to so-called "masculine" or "feminine" vocal standards as regards their gender. In this sense, more and more people in Brazil are seeking speech therapists in private practices, outpatient clinics, and hospitals (associated or not to Transsexualization Process teams within the Unified Health System - SUS) for a therapy that would correspond, at first, to an "adjustment" to vocal parameters related to feminine or masculine gender identities. This research takes as a premise that the voice is one of the main gender markers in social interaction and that the "vocal adjustment" process (a category proper to the field of speech therapy) is an important aspect in the (re)elaboration of gender performances among trans people. Thus, we explore the relation between voice, gender and transsexuality. Based on a review of literature and the analysis of interviews with speech therapists, we seek to explain the role of Speech Therapy in this process, which is permeated by gender constructs, and the way that speech therapy clinical practice addresses the vocal "adjustment" process by trans persons. We address the fact that the voice of trans people is under the care of speech therapists and analyze their narratives in trying to understand the values, the scientific conceptions and the socio-cultural constructions of voice, gender and sexuality that intersects their clinical practice with trans patients
