ABSTRACT

Objective:

To present safety practices in the surgical environment based on the checklist proposed by the World Health Organization, to discuss their importance, as well as to present strategies for their implementation and monitoring of adherence by surgical teams and safety indicators.

Methodology:

Narrative review using the LILACS, MEDLINE, Scielo and Proqualis portal databases, as well as national and international sites of recognized organs as World Health Organization, Ministry of Health and National Sanitary Surveillance Agency, whose research was carried out on May, 10th 2018.

Results:

The world surgical safety movement, promoted in 2004 by the World Health Organization, culminated in the Second Global Challenge "Safe Surgery Saves Lives. In 2013, the Brazilian government launched the National Patient Safety Program, in the midst of which was established the Safe Surgery Protocol. The structuring of a surgical patient safety routine can cause significant impacts in reducing the number of postoperative complications, morbidity and mortality and hospitalization time.

Conclusion:

The Surgical Safety Checklist is an essential tool for harm reduction and decrease of adverse events. This protocol needs to be recognized and valued by teams, and for this, professional training, continuing education and monitoring of results are the primary means to achieve the desired standard of surgical safety
