ABSTRACT
A psychohistorical exploration is attempted of biographical aspects, clinical description and characteristics of the story of Carlota of Mexico, wife of the Emperor Maximiliano, leader of the brief monarchy period in Mexico under the tutelage of Napoleon III of France, around the sixth decade of the 19th Century. Carlota experienced her first acute psychotic symptoms during a trip to Europe from which she never returned to Mexico, dying in 1927 at age 87. Symptoms gathered from different sources (historical studies from different periods, several pieces of correspondence, and the social context of the epoch) are described and discussed, and etiopathogenic hypotheses are formulated. From certain perspectives, the diagnosis of schizophrenia may seem pertinent even though it would never cover the totality of the existential (human, interpersonal, political and even genetically determined) drama of this tragic character.
