ABSTRACT

Objective:

Most of the community urinary infections are caused by bacteria from the human intestinal microflora, and Escherichia coli being the most common microorganism. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of E. coli in urinary samples from community patients and establish the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of this uropathogen.

Methods:

A retrospective study was conducted based on the data collection of uroculture performed at the Clinical Laboratory of PUC Goiás (LAC/PUC Goiás) between January 2018 and june 2018, in order to identify the prevalence of E. coli, its susceptibility antimicrobial profile, the most affected age group and gender.

Results:

There was a prevalence of 76.0% of E. coli in urocultures, female prevalence (90.0%) and age range ranging from 2 to 85 years, of which 50 years of age. Was detected 100.0% sensitivity of the strains to amikacin and netilmicin, high sensitivity (99.4%) against cefoxitin, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, piperacillin-tazobactam and ticarcillin-clavulanic acid were observed. On the other hand, there was high resistance to ampicillin (75.1%), ampicillin-sulbactam (44.8%) and nalidixic acid (47.3%).

Conclusion:

There was a high sensitivity of E. coli strains against amikacin, netilmicin, cefoxitin, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, piperacillin-tazobactam and ticarcillin-clavulanic acid.
