Mortalidad en pacientes diabéticos hospitalizados en el Hospital de Puyo, provincia Pastaza, Ecuador / Mortality in admitted diabetic patients in the Hospital of Puyo, Pastaza province, Ecuador

RESUMEN

RESUMEN Fundamento La diabetes mellitus es una enfermedad crónica que se caracteriza por el aumento sostenido de las cifras de glucemia. Es descrita como una de las principales causas de morbimortalidad a nivel mundial, así como de distintos grados de discapacidad y gran afectación de la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud. Objetivo: caracterizar la mortalidad en pacientes diabéticos hospitalizados en el Hospital General de Puyo. Métodos: estudio descriptivo, realizado en el Hospital de Puyo, provincia Pastaza, Ecuador, durante 2016 y 2017, con 168 pacientes, de los cuales 20 fueron fallecidos. Fuero revisadas las historias clínicas de cada uno de los casos incluidos en la investigación. Las variables del estudio fueron sexo, edad, control glucémico, causa de ingreso, tiempo de evolución de la enfermedad y tiempo de hospitalización. Resultados: en los fallecidos, el promedio de edad fue de 72 años. Existió un predominio de pacientes femeninos (65,0 %), con tiempo de evolución de la enfermedad de más de tres años (90,0 %), y con un control glucémico inadecuado (70,0 %). Las enfermedades intercurrentes fueron las principales causas de ingresos y defunciones (75,0 %). Conclusión: los pacientes diabéticos fallecieron tuvieron como causa de ingreso más frecuente a las enfermedades intercurrentes, con más de 70 años de edad la mayoría de ellos, tiempo de evolución de enfermedad superior a los tres años y presencia de un control metabólico inadecuado.

ABSTRACT Foundation Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease which is characterized by a sustained increase in blood glucose levels. It is described as one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, as well as responsable for different degrees of disability and a great impact on health-related quality of life. Objective: to characterize mortality in admitted diabetic patients in the General Hospital of Puyo. Methods: a descriptive study, carried out in the Hospital of Puyo, Pastaza province, Ecuador, during 2016 and 2017, with 168 patients, of which 20 were deceased. The medical records of each of the cases included in the study were reviewed. The variables were sex, age, glycemic control, cause of admission, time of disease evolution and duration of admission. Results: in the deceased, the average age was 72 years. There was a predominance of female patients (65.0%), with time of evolution of the disease of more than three years (90.0%), and with an inadequate glycemic control (70.0%). Inter current diseases were the main causes of income and deaths (75.0%). Conclusion: diabetic patients who died had inter current diseases as the most frequent cause of admission, older than 70 years most of them, time of evolution of disease greater than three years and presence of an inadequate metabolic control.
