El cuidado parental durante el primer año de vida / Parental care during the first year of life

RESUMEN

El presente estudio tiene el objetivo de caracterizar el cuidado parental ofrecido por un grupo de madres y padres a su infante de primer año de vida. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 20 tríadas madre-padre-hijo/hija, residentes en el municipio Plaza de la Revolución, La Habana, Cuba. Entre las/los infantes predominan los que tienen 8 meses de edad, mientras que la mayoría de las madres y los padres se encuentran en el grupo etario 25-29 años. Los datos del estudio se recolectaron en el hogar de las familias mediante los Cuestionarios de relación madre-hijo/hija y padre-hijo/hija, construidos con base en la Teoría del Apego y validados por una de las autoras; las entrevistas sobre el desarrollo de la comunicación y el desarrollo socio-emocional del niño/la niña (Cruz, 2014); y la observación, mediante una guía elaborada por las autoras. La información obtenida se analizó cualitativamente a partir de la triangulación de los métodos. Como resultado se encontró que las madres son las principales encargadas del cuidado de la descendencia y que los padres manifiestan diferentes niveles de participación en esta tarea. Las madres son más sensibles, disponibles y cooperadoras ante las necesidades de la/el infante. Asimismo, se constató la influencia de algunas representaciones mentales parentales y el género en las manifestaciones de cuidado que ofrecen las madres y los padres a su hijo/hija de primer año de vida.

ABSTRACT

The present study aims to characterize the parental care offered by a group of mothers and fathers to their first year-old infant. The sample consisted of 20 mother-father-child triads, residents in Plaza de la Revolución, Havana, Cuba. Among those infants, those who are 8 months old predominate, while most mothers and fathers are in the age group 25-29 years. The study data were collected in the families' homes through the mother-infant and father-infant Relations Questionnaires, constructed based on the Theory of Attachment and validated by one of the authors; interviews about the development of communication, and the socio-emotional development of the child (Cruz, 2014); and observation, through a guide prepared by the authors. The information obtained was analyzed qualitatively from the triangulation of the methods. As a result, it was found that mothers are the main caregivers of the offspring and that the parents show different levels of participation in this task. Mothers are more sensitive, available and cooperative to the needs of the infant. Likewise, the influence of some parental mental representations and gender on the manifestations of care offered by mothers and fathers to their first-year child was confirmed
