RESUMO

Este trabalho objetiva analisar algumas teses defendidas por médicos e doutores da Faculdade de Medicina da Bahia (FAMEB), nos anos finais do século XIX e nos iniciais do XX, a fim de ampliar as análises e as formulações sobre o dilema racial brasileiro. O estudo centra-se nas abordagens que, ao fazerem uma leitura à brasileira do racismo científico e do darwinismo social, buscavam soluções para os problemas raciais por meio da prática de exercícios físicos. Até o momento, segundo as pesquisas mais aceitas (SCHWARCZ, 2011), a ação dos médicos baianos, buscando o aperfeiçoamento racial e social da população brasileira por meio do exercício físico, apontam raros trabalhos que começaram a aparecer a partir da década de 1920. Porém, a partir das fontes primárias é possível identificar que essas ações iniciaram antes, no final do século XIX.

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to analyse some thesis defended by doctors in Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of Bahia (FAMEB), in the last years of the 19th century and in the early years of the 20th, in order to expand analysis and formulations about the Brazilian racial dilemma. The study focuses on approaches that, under a Brazilian conception of scientific racism and social Darwinism, tried to solve racial problems through the practice of physical exercises. Until now, according to the most accepted researches (SCHWARCZ, 1993), the action of Bahian doctors, searching for the racial and social improvement of the Brazilian population through physical exercise, points out rare studies that came to light in the 1920s. However, in the first readings, it is possible to identify earlier events with the same perspective, in the late 19th century.
