ABSTRACT
Introduction - The Feminine Empowerment concept can be understood as the act of expanding the power of social participation to women, ensuring that they can be aware of the struggle for their rights, with total equality between genders. It is also related to the process of self-confidence, power of choice and guarantee of social resources, which makes women capable of controlling their lives in the present and guaranteeing actions for their future. Women have changed and reversed many roles imposed by society and these changes may have altered the traditional shape of women's health, quality of life, way of life and goals of full achievement as a woman. Objective To analyze and propose a female empowerment score according to multidimensional components that express the levels of women's autonomy and its evolution in different countries between two surveys. Methods The data for this cross-sectional study come from the Demographic Health Survey (DHS), the sample was selected from the group of women of childbearing age between 15 and 49 years [n=1652956], corresponding to the first and last survey carried out in each parents. The selected countries were separated into continents or geographic regions Asia [9 countries]; South America [4 countries]; Europe [3 countries]; Caribbean [5 countries]; West Africa [11 countries]; East Africa [13 countries]; Central-Southern Africa [9 countries]. The study, variables were allocated into three domains of empowerment resource, agency and institutional structure, where women are represented in a civil, economic and social way. In this study, behavioral variables, decision-making power, education, income and attitudes towards domestic violence were used. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) allowed the use of empowerment patterns as synthetic descriptors of the different aspects of the assessment of women's autonomy. The adequacy of the sample in relation to the degree of partial correlation between the variables was estimated using the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test. Results Four empowerment patterns were generated for Europe and five empowerment patterns for the continents Asia, South America, Caribbean, West Africa, East Africa, Central-Southern Africa. The first two patterns of empowerment across continents or geographic region represented women with less autonomy, the last two patterns represented women with more autonomy. Some countries showed an evolution of women according to the patterns of belonging, therefore, women who were allocated to a pattern characterized by the absence of autonomy, became part of the pattern of greater autonomy. In other countries, there was no evolution of women in the patterns of belonging. Conclusions - Empowerment patterns represent the diversity of possibilities to conceptualize empowerment, when analyzing in a multidimensional rather than binary way, it is possible to add women's characteristics and identify patterns of autonomy or absence of autonomy for decisionmaking, measures and public policies for the benefit of the women. It is noteworthy that there are variables such as income, education, access to health, and family planning that are associated with the pattern of greater autonomy. The KMO was above 0.80 in all continents or geographic regions analyzed, considering that the adequacy of the matrix is good.
