La ciencia moderna parece haber empezado con el hombre del renacimiento o polímata, como Leonardo da Vinci o Galileo Galilei, quienes reunían en sí todo el conocimiento de su época. Esto encaja con la idea popular del genio que por sí solo crea todo con la fuerza descomunal de la mente, dejando al lado la importancia del contexto social e histórico para las innovaciones y avances. Sin embargo, hasta Isaac Newton, otra persona a la que se asignan los rótulos de polímata y genio ­y que generalmente no fue conocido por su humildad y la disposición a compartir el crédito de un descubrimiento­, reconoció "Si he visto más lejos, es poniéndome sobre los hombros de Gigantes"

ABSTRACT

Modern science seems to have started with the renaissance man or polymath, such as Leonardo da Vinci or Galileo Galilei, who gathered in himself all the knowledge of his time. This fits with the popular idea of the genius who alone creates everything with the enormous power of the mind, leaving aside the importance of the social and historical context for innovations and advances. However, even Isaac Newton, another person to whom the labels of polymath and genius are assigned - and who was not generally known for his humility and willingness to share credit for a discovery - acknowledged, "If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants"
