ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT In Brazil, cervical cancer represents the third most frequent cancer in women. National guidelines suggest that cancer screening begins at the age of 25 years. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of patients aged less than or equal to 30 years among patients with a proven histological diagnosis of cervical cancer or high-grade intraepithelial lesions from the HCPA gynecology and obstetrics outpatient clinic.

Methods:

A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service of Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre. All patients diagnosed with high-grade intraepithelial lesion (HGIEL) or cervical cancer in cytopathological tests, biopsies and conizations from April 2006 to November 2017 were enrolled. Data were collected from the institution's electronic medical record. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 18.0 (Chicago Inc., 2009).

Results:

A total of 119 women aged 30 years and under were diagnosed with HGIEL and cervical cancer. The median age was 27.00 years [25.61-26.74] and the median age at sexual initiation was 15.00 [14.94-15.58]. Our sample showed that 74% of women had pregnancy prior to diagnosis, with 35.3% having more than 3 pregnancies. In our study, it was found that 32.8% were active smokers. KEYWORDS High-grade intraepithelial lesion, cervical cancer, young women, screening for cervical cancer
