PALAVRAS-CHAVE Sífilis congênita, escolaridade, incidência, Centers of Disease Control and Prevention
ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT

Objective:

To describe the incidence rate of congenital syphilis in Brazil and compare it with data provided by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States.

Method:

This retrospective cross-sectional study used the DATASUS database to perform data collection, combined with a search in SINASC. Subsequently, the incidence rate in the years surveyed was calculated.

Results:

The incidence rate of congenital syphilis was higher in young women and with low education. There are more than 8 cases of congenital syphilis in every 1000 live births, with a growth of more than 300% in the analyzed period.

Conclusions:

The increase in the annual incidence demonstrates a weakness in the fight against the disease, in order to point out the imminent need to implement short-term actions to control the disease. KEYWORDS Congenital syphilis, schooling, incidence rate, Centers of Disease Control and Prevention
