RESUMO
Objetivo:
conhecer a perspectiva de profissionais da enfermagem que atuam em uma unidade de terapia intensiva frente à morte e o morrer.Metodologia:
estudo descritivo-exploratório, com abordagem qualitativa, desenvolvido com 23 profissionais de uma unidade de terapia intensiva de uma cidade do Norte do Paraná. Os dados foram coletados em janeiro de 2017, por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, e submetidos à análise de conteúdo de Bardin.Resultados:
emergiram três categorias temáticas Lidando com a morte e o morrer onde expressam preparo ou (des)preparo para lidar com a morte, (des)sensibilização ou impotência diante da morte; Enfrentando a iminência de morte por meio da religiosidade/espiritualidade; e Expressando empatia e compaixão onde revelam o sofrimento diante da morte de pacientes jovens, o alívio diante da morte de pacientes idosos e em cuidados paliativos, e a compaixão ao presenciar a dor da família.Conclusão:
os participantes utilizam estratégias de defesa e enfrentamento, na tentativa de negar ou fugir desse confronto, ou aliviar a dor, a angústia e o sofrimento experienciados nesse contexto.ABSTRACT
Objective:
to know the perspective of nursing professionals who work in an intensive care unit in the face of death and dying.Methodology:
a descriptive-exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, carried out with 23 professionals from an intensive care unit in a city in Northern of the state of Paraná. Data collection took place in January 2017, through semi-structured interviews, and were submitted to Bardin's content analysis.Results:
three thematic categories emerged Dealing with death and dying where they express to be prepared or (un)prepared to deal with death, (de)sensitization or impotence in the face of death; Facing the imminence of death through religiosity/spirituality; and Expressing empathy and compassion where they expose suffering in the face of the death of young patients, relief in the face of the death of elderly patients and in palliative care, and compassion in witnessing the family's pain.Conclusion:
the participants use protection and coping strategies, in an attempt to deny or escape this confrontation, or to relieve the pain, anguish, and suffering experienced in this scenario.
