ABSTRACT
Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) is a multifactorial disease characterized by elevated and sustained blood pressure (BP) levels. There are several risk factors involved in its clinical expression, among them genetic inheritance, age, gender, ethnicity, excess weight, excessive intake of salt and alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, among others. In this review, lifestyle modifications are addressed as factors associated not only with prevention, but also with the treatment of a very prevalent disease in the general population, with a high socioeconomic impact and responsible for significant cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.
