ABSTRACT
The pathogenesis of essential hypertension is multifactorial and highly complex, involving the interaction of numerous independent or interdependent mechanisms. Genetic factors, activation of neurohormonal systems, obesity and increased dietary salt intake, among others, are implicated in the development of this pathology. Essential hypertension, a condition of high prevalence in the world population, is the main risk factor for cardiovascular disease, being directly responsible for high morbidity and mortality. It is fundamental to have more thorough knowledge of the possible contributors to its genesis and perpetuation, serving as a guide for the development and institution of more targeted therapies, aiming at reducing the enormous social impact of this disease.
