The teaching of dentistry in the 21st century: where are we heading to?

ABSTRACT

The 21st century has brought swift changes in organizations, due in part to current exponential technological advances. The academic programs in health are not an exception and the teaching in these areas has also been adapting to such changes. However, dentistry is rooted in medicine, whose systematic format stems from Ancient Greece. Empathy is a key element not only for patient-physician relationships but also for treatment success, so our dental teaching must pay attention to this element, which is often neglected because of our current "high-performance culture".

RESUMEN

El siglo XXI se caracteriza por cambios vertiginosos en las organizaciones, debidos en parte al avance exponencial de la tecnología. Las carreras del área de la salud no están excluidas de estos cambios, y por tanto la forma de enseñar también ha debido adaptarse a ellos. Sin embargo, la odontología nace de la medicina, cuyo formato sistematizado nace de la antigua Grecia. La empatía es un elemento clave tanto para la relación médico-paciente como para el éxito de un tratamiento médico, y se hace necesario prestarle atención a esta dimensión en nuestra enseñanza odontológica, muchas veces inadvertida a causa de nuestra "cultura del rendimiento".
