Introdução:
A insuficiência renal crônica é uma condição mórbida decorrente de uma série de fatores, não contemplando expectativa de cura. A hemodiálise é o tratamento de apoio que consiste na remoção de substâncias tóxicas do sangue. O objetivo foi identificar a prevalência de sintomas depressivos em pacientes com insuficiência renal crônica submetidos à hemodiálise em Tubarão, Santa Catarina, Brasil.Métodos:
Estudo transversal, onde os pacientes em hemodiálise responderam questionário sóciodemográfico e o Inventário de Beck para Depressão (IBD).Resultados:
Participaram do estudo 97 pacientes, 57,7% homens, com idade média de 60,3 anos (DP±14.64) e com tempo médio de tratamento de 31,7 meses (DP±34.73). Com o IBD foi identificado que 71,1% apresentavam algum nível de depressão, destes 49,5% apresentavam nível leve, 15,5% nível moderado e 6,2% nível grave de depressão.Conclusão:
A prevalência de depressão foi maior na população feminina estudada, com maior frequência do nível leve definido pelo IBD (AU)ABSTRACT

Chronic renal failure is a morbid condition resulting from a number of factors, including no expectation of cure. Hemodialysis is a supportive treatment that consists in removing toxic substances from the blood. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of depressive symptoms in patients with chronic renal failure undergoing hemodialysis in Tubarão, Santa Catarina, Brazil.Methods:
A cross-sectional study where patients on hemodialysis answered a demographic questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).Results:
The study included 97 patients, 57.7% males, with mean age 60.3 years (SD±14.64) and mean treatment period 31.7 months (SD±34.73). The BDI showed that 71.1% of the participants had some level of depression, 49.5% with mild, 15.5% with moderate and 6.2% with severe level of depression.Conclusion:
The prevalence of depression was higher in the female population studied, with a higher frequency of the mild level as defined by BDI (AU)
