ABSTRACT
The poor postural habits adopted in the daily activities of schoolchildren may be the factors responsible for the prevalence of back pain and postural changes. Objetive The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of back pain in primary school students from a military school in the city of Porto Alegre-RS and its association with demographic, behavioral, socioeconomic and hereditary factors. 76 students of 6th and 8th grades were evaluated, using a questionnaire called BackPEI. Data analysis was performed from descriptive statistics and the calculation of prevalence ratios and their respective confidence intervals of 95% (α= 0.05). The results showed that the prevalence of pain of 65.8 % of those students is associated with their time spent watching television (0 to 3 hours were 60.4 %, from 4 to 5 hours and 8 or more hours 100 % of the subjects reported pain), with the sleeping time (0 to 7 hours were 69.7%, from 8 to 9 hours were 59.4% and 10 hours or more 100%) and sitting on a bench (25 % seated properly and 70.8 % improperly). Although significant values to associate the pain with the other variables were not found, the importance of regular physical exercise practice and the way they transport their schoolbag is highlighted. It is also important to accomplish postural evaluation to identify the risk factors in order to avoid back pain in childhood years. This study shows that the prevalence of back pain among schoolchildren is associated with time spent watching television, hours of sleep per night and the posture adopted while sitting on a bench.(AU)
