ABSTRACT

Objectives:

To evaluate the efficacy of passive ultrasonic activation (PUI), an additional instrument and the combination of both for removal of intracanal calcium hydroxide using computerized microtomography (micro-CT).

Methods:

32 singlerooted human teeth were prepared using the universal Protaper® rotary instrumentation system, with Finishing File 4 (F4) as the final file. The samples were filled with intracanal Ca(OH)2 plus propyleneglycol 400. After 30 days, the samples were divided into four groups according to the medication removal technique. In the groups where PUI was used, it was done by suction-irrigation with 5 mL of 1% NaOCl, 3 ml 17% EDTA with ultrasonic agitation for one minute at 2 mm from the working length and 5 ml of 1% NaOCl. The additional instrument used was the F5 file. In the control group, removal of the medication was performed only with the final instrument (F4) and using 17% EDTA, kept for one minute in the canal without ultrasonic activation. The samples were evaluated by micro-CT, at three different stages of the endodontic procedure 1) after chemical-surgical preparation of canal 2) 30 days after application of the Ca(OH)2 medication 3) after removal of the medication. Microtomography images were evaluated using the CTan (SkyScan) Software. The root was divided in apical, middle and cervical. Each data set was analyzed using the CTan software gray scale to determine the volume (mm3) of the canal after the preparation, the volume occupied by the medication after 30 days, the medication residue volume and the volume of the canal after medication removal. The residue percentage was also calculated in relation to the volume of the canal and the volume of medication found after 30 days.
