ABSTRACT
Secondary analysis of the relationship between physical activity and function in the elderly; data were collected through a questionnaire. Interviewed 6767 older adults identifi ed by home visits, randomly selected in 59 cities from the RS state. Functional level of the 5528 (81.7%) sedentary individuals was not significantly lower than the 835 (12.3%) who presented low level. The 404 (6.0%) respondents with high level had significantly (p < 0.001) greater function than the other groups, after controlling for gender, age and education. High levels of physical activity were associated with preserved function and ADLs development. Findings from the present study suggest that only high levels of physical activities are associated with functional ability.
