RESUMEN

Esta revisión pretende identificar los posi - bles métodos para evaluar la articulación Temporomandibular y determinar su com- portamiento ante cambios en la oclusión. El objetivo secundario es conocer lo que se ha reportado en la literatura frente a los temas de oclusión y articulación tempo - romandibular, topes oclusales y métodos diagnósticos contemporáneos para valorar la articulación y estructuras adyacentes. Se realizó una revisión de la literatura con 44 referencias sobre los tópicos a valorar; conceptos de oclusión funcional, desarrollo de la articulación Temporomandibular y su papel en la oclusión del paciente, los topes oclusales como una herramienta terapéu - tica en el tratamiento de ortodoncia, y los métodos diagnósticos actuales que valoran el complejo Temporomandibular; técnicas imagenológicas de vanguardia como lo es la tomografía de Cone Beam y los estudios que lo soportan. Se pudo concluir que un método eficaz para valorar el complejo Temporomandibular es la tomografía de haz de cono, el cual tiene una relación ade- cuada de riesgo-beneficio. De igual forma no se tiene evidencia suficiente y contun - dente sobre los posibles efectos de los topes oclusales en la articulación, por lo que es necesario realizar un estudio aleatorizado de casos y controles para determinar esos posibles efectos...(Au)

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this review is identify the possible diagnostics methods of the Tem- poromandibular Joint that can determine the behavior of itself when oclusal changes occur. In addition, the secondary objective are know relevant information about occlu - sion, Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ), bite turbos and contemporaneous diagnostics methods for the TMJ and near structures. A literature reviewed with a total bac - kground of 44 articles. Those articles include concepts of functional occlusion, Temporomandibular joint development and the importance on the patient's occlusion pattern, also the Bite Turbos as an impor - tant mechanism to help the orthodontic treatment, and finally the reports that supports diagnostics methods to evaluate de Temporomandibular complex like the Cone-Beam Computer Tomography as a vanguard method. We concluded that the Cone Beam CT was an excellent method to evaluate the Temporomandibular complex, and has a great relationship between risk- benefits. In addition, we conclude that there were insufficient information about the possible effects on the Temporomandibular joint using the Bite Turbos appliance.
