Ritos de passagem da adolescência à vida adulta: diferenças etárias e de gênero / Rites of passage from adolescence to adulthood: age and gender differences

RESUMO

Este trabalho objetiva descrever as escolhas de adultos para ritos de passagem da adolescência à vida adulta. Busca-se também identificar os ritos mais significativos, bem como diferenças etárias e de gênero. Participaram 191 universitários, matriculados em uma instituição pública federal em Porto Alegre (RS). Utilizou-se como instrumento o Questionário de Ritos de Passagem. Os três ritos mais citados foram tomada de decisões importantes sem ajuda da família, responsabilidade por outras pessoas e independência financeira dos pais. As mulheres se destacaram na indicação da independência financeira, e os homens no casamento como rito de passagem à vida adulta. A única diferença etária encontrada foi em relação a ser responsável por outras pessoas, rito mais citado pelos participantes mais velhos. Os resultados são discutidos com base na influência social sobre as percepções acerca da obtenção do status de indivíduo adulto.

ABSTRACT

This work aims at describing the choices of adults for rites of passage from adolescence to adulthood. The objective is also to identify the most significant rites, as well as age and gender differences. Participants included 191 university students, enrolled at a federal public institution in Porto Alegre (RS). We used as an instrument the Questionnaire of Rites of Passage. The three most cited were making major decisions with no help from the family, responsibility for other people, and financial independence from parents. There were more women indicating financial independence, and more men indicating marriage as rite of passage to adulthood. The only age difference found was in relation to being responsible for other people, which was the most cited rite by older participants. The results are discussed based on the social influence on the perceptions regarding the granting of the status of an adult individual.
