RESUMEN
Se efectuó un estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal de 300 pacientes en las edades de 8 a 18 años, atendidos en la consulta de Ortodoncia del Policlínico Docente José Martí Pérez de Santiago de Cuba, desde diciembre del 2014 hasta marzo del 2015, con vistas a determinar la presencia de los terceros molares y sus características. La información necesaria se obtuvo de las historias clínicas y de las radiografías panorámicas, y entre los principales resultados estuvo la existencia de los cuatro cordales (70,7 por ciento), lo cual fue más frecuente en el grupo etario de 6-12 años (48,1 por ciento), en el sexo femenino (53,8 por ciento) y en el grupo étnico mestizo (60,4 por ciento). Se concluyó que la mayoría de la casuística presentaba al menos un tercer molar, sobre todo en la mandíbula
ABSTRACT
An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study of 300 patients aged 8 to 18, assisted in the Orthodontic Service of José Martí Pérez Teaching Polyclinic in Santiago de Cuba, was carried out from December, 2014 to March, 2015, aimed at determining the presence of third molars and their characteristics. The necessary information was obtained from the medical records and panoramic X-rays, and the existence of the four wisdom teeth was among the main results (70.7 percent), that which was more frequent in the 6-12 age group (48.1 percent), female sex (53.8 percent) and mestizo ethnic group (60.4 percent).
