RESUMEN

La Universidad, como entidad de conservación, transmisión y creación del conocimiento tiene el deber imperativo de fomentar los procesos de investigación científica en el profesorado y alumnado para al- canzar la plenitud de su ser en el progreso y el bienestar de las naciones. El quehacer de la universidad ecuatoriana desde sus orígenes fue principalmente la transmisión de conocimientos adquiridos, pero fue también centro inspirador de actividad científica, con procedimientos acordes a la época, que ayudaron al desarrollo del país y trascendieron las fronteras de la patria. Ejemplo de ello es Eugenio Espejo, graduado en la Universidad Santo Tomás, que con sus primitivas investigaciones descubrió la noción de la fermenta- ción de las sustancias y las causas de los contagios y contribuyó al desarrollo de nuevos métodos médicos y el uso de instrumentos más modernos.(1) Incluso 200 años después, parte de sus reflexiones y planteamien- tos son de utilidad en la construcción del actual sistema nacional de salud.

ABSTRACT

The University, as an entity for the conservation, transmission and creation of knowledge, has the imperative duty to promote scientific research processes in teachers and students to achieve the fullness of their being in the progress and well-being of nations. The work of the Ecuadorian university from its origins was mainly the transmission of acquired knowledge, but it was also an inspiring center of scientific activity, with procedures according to the time, which helped the development of the country and transcended the borders of the country. An example of this is Eugenio Espejo, a graduate of the Santo Tomás University, who with his early research discovered the notion of the fermentation of substances and the causes of contagion and contributed to the development of new medical methods and the use of more efficient instruments. modern.(1) Even 200 years later, part of his reflections and approaches are useful in the construction of the current national health system.
