ABSTRACT

Background:

in México as in the rest of the world, in order to face the problem of the degenerative chronic diseases, the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social and all other health institutions have taken the task of looking alternatives to improve the quality of patients life.

Objective:

to compare the quality of life in diabetic patients type 2 who have a family support network with those who do not have it.

Methodology:

cases and Controls study. 2 groups of patients were conformed a cases-group (n = 18) diabetic patients type 2 with good quality of life, and the second a control-group (n = 18) diabetic patients type 2 with bad quality of life. Quality of life was evaluated with the vignettes COOP-WONCA and the family support with a validated instrument. The results were analyzed with c2, Mann's Whitney's U and algebra calculations.

Results:

it was observed that in the case group 16 of them have a family support network and 2 of them do not; in the control group four of them have a family support network and 14 of them do not. Mann's Whitney's U p < 0.0001, x2 P < 0.0001 and RM 28.0 (confidence interval 95 %). 72.2 % patients with family support network receive the support from their spouse and 27.8 % (5/18) from their older daughter.

Conclusions:

diabetic patients type 2 who count with family support network have higher quality of life. Men receive more family support than women, and they receive it from a female member.
