Percepción profesional y pública del campo de acción de la Otorrinolaringología y Cirugía de Cabeza y Cuello en un hospital de tercer nivel / Professional and public perception of the field of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery in a tertiary care hospital

RESUMEN

Resumen Introducción Actualmente, existen diversas especialidades médicas; esto crea confusión acerca del campo de acción de cada una de ellas. El quehacer de un otorrinolaringólogo y cirujano de cabeza y cuello se encuentra limitado a las enfermedades de oídos, nariz y garganta de forma equívoca. Objetivo Examinar la percepción que tienen los médicos generales, especialistas y la población general acerca de las enfermedades que resuelve un especialista afín. Materiales y métodos Se trata de un estudio descriptivo, en el cual se aplicó una encuesta a los médicos generales, residentes y a la población general del Hospital Español de México. Resultados Se obtuvo un total de 146 encuestas. Todos los encuestados -excepto los residentes de Cirugía General-, 106 (72.6%), consideraron a los otorrinolaringólogos y cirujanos de cabeza y cuello expertos en cirugía funcional y estética nasal. Conclusiones Las opiniones que se obtuvieron de la población encuestada difieren mucho entre sí y demuestran que, en general, no hay un conocimiento claro del campo de acción de nuestra especialidad, lo cual retrasa la atención médica eficaz y oportuna de los pacientes.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction There are currently several medical specialties; this creates confusion about the field of action of each of them. The work of an otolaryngologist and head and neck surgeon is wrongly limited to diseases of the ears, nose, and throat. Objective To examine the perception that general practitioners, medical specialists and the general population have of the diseases that a certain specialist solves. Materials and methods This is a descriptive study in which a survey was applied to general practitioners, residents and to the general population of the Hospital Español de México. Results A total of 146 surveys was obtained. All the respondents-except general surgery residents-, 106 (72.6%), consider otolaryngologists and head and neck surgeons experts only in functional nasal and aesthetic surgery. Conclusions The opinions obtained from the surveyed population differ greatly from each other and evidently show that, in general, there is no clear knowledge of the field of action of our specialty, which results in a delay in effective medical care and patient protection.
