Relación entre el IMC, la circunferencia de cintura y el índice de forma del cuerpo (ABSI), en niños y adolescentes / Relationship between BMI, waist circumference, and the index body shape (ABSI), in children and adolescents

RESUMEN

El propósito de este estudio es relacionar el índice de masa corporal (IMC), la circunferencia de cintura (CC) y el índice de forma corporal (ABSI), en un grupo de niños y adolescentes entre los 6 y 15 años de edad, de dos instituciones educativas de Caracas. La muestra es de 484 escolares de las instituciones educativas "El Libertador" y "Antímano II", ubicadas en Caracas. Para lo cual se midieron las variables edad, talla, peso, IMC, CC e ABSI. Se calculó el índice de Quetelet o IMC, a partir de la relación peso (kg), talla (cm2), la circunferencia de cintura media se midió a partir de un punto referencial equidistante del borde inferior de la última costilla y el borde superior de la cresta ilíaca. El índice ABSI, se obtuvo de la relación entre la circunferencia de cintura dividida entre la raíz cúbica del IMC al cuadrado multiplicada por la raíz cuadrada de la talla. Se aplicaron medidas estadísticas descriptivas (Media, Desviación, Percentiles). Los resultados indican que se puede utilizar el IMC y la CC, para medir sobrepeso y obesidad (13,01% y 15,70%, respectivamente), mientras que el ABSI (>90,00% en riesgo), aún no es una medida que pueda ser utilizada en niños y adolescentes entre los 6 y 15 años de edad , sin embargo la sensibilidad y especificidad es73,68% y 98,73%, respectivamente. Se concluye que es necesario seguir investigando la aplicación del índice ABSI en niños y adolescentes, para lograr mejorar su sensibilidad y especificidad.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to relate the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and index shaped body (ABSI), to group of children and adolescents in two schools of Caracas. The sample is of 484 gradeschoolers of 6-15 years old, of two educational institutions "El Libertador" and "Antímano II", located in Caracas. For which measured the age, size, weight, BMI, waist circunference and ABSI. We calculated the index of Quetelet or BMI, from the relationship weight (kg), size (cm2), waist circumference was measured from a reference point equidistant from the lower border of the last rib and the top edge of the iliac crest. The index ABSI, was obtained from the relation between the waist circumference divided between the cube root of the BMI squared multiplied by the square root of the size. Descriptive statistics (mean, deviation, Percentiles) measures were applied. The results indicate that BMI can be used and the WC for measuring overweight and obesity (13.01% and 15.70%, respectively), while the ABSI (> 90,00% at risk), is not a measure that can be used in school children and adolescents (6-15 year old), however the sensitivity and specificity is 73,68% and 98,73%, respectively. It is concluded that it is necessary to further investigate the application index ABSI in grade schoolers, to improve their sensitivity and specificity.
