Voice quality of patients with T1a glottic carcinoma treated by laser cordectomy versus those treated with radiotherapy

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to assess the voice quality of patients with T1a glottic carcinoma who received radiation therapy in one group and laser cordectomy in another group in order to objectify the voice quality outcome in such cases. Twenty male patients with T1a glottic cancer were divided into two groups. One group underwent radiotherapy as the only line of treatment. The other group underwent laser cordectomy as the only line of treatment in such cases A third group of 10 subjects is normal or control group. Voice assessment in the form of Auditory Perceptual Assessment for the recorded voice, Acoustic analysis of voice using CSL, aerodynamic analysis and visi-pitch were done to all the patients in this study. Results showed that voice quality was preserved in cases treated by radiotherapy and it was significantly near to the normative group. On the other hand, the group underwent laser cordectomy showed that voice quality was significantly different perceptually as well as the aerodynamic and acoustic parameters than the normative group
