ABSTRACT
All students living with a single parent in a six randomly selected schools were included in the present study [n=113 boys and 87 girls]. An equal number of controls were selected randomly from the same school and matched by age and sex. Adolescent boys and girls living with a single parent were significantly more anxious, more depressed and their self esteem was lower than those living in intact families. Adolescents of single parent families were found to receive a significantly less adaptive, emotional and general support than those living in intact ones where t=3.675, 5.246 respectively. However, no significant relation was found between the cause of absence of a parent and the amount of support received.
