Developing nursing care standards for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization

ABSTRACT

The present study aims at developing nursing care standards for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization through developing nursing care standards entailing all criteria related to nursing care of patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, testing the validity of the developed standards from expert's point of view and testing the reliability of the developed standards through series of measurements of nurses' performance. Two groups of subjects were included in this study; nurses group [42] nurses working in cardiac catheterization unit at National Heart Institute, and 45 Jury experts from different categories. Three tools of data collection were used; nurses' questionnaire sheet, jury opinionaire sheet, and performance sheet. The results of this study indicated that there was a high percent of agreement [ranging from 95.6% to 100%] upon all items of the developed structure and process standards as regards face validity as reported by jury group. Moreover, the jury groups indicated high total percent of agreement upon most of the items of the developed structure and process standards as regards content validity. No significant differences were found among the three jury groups. As regards reliability, the results indicated that observations of all items of the developed structure standards were the same at the two separate time periods, also, no statistically significant differences were found between nurses' performance for both time periods. However, the only difference of statistical significance was in relation to items of "check a signed Consent form, and check the puncture site frequently", p<0.05. The study concluded that the developed nursing care standards had acceptable validity and reliability to be used in the cardiac catheterization unit at National heart Institute. Also, it recommended that the developed standards should be applied for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization, and revised and updated regularly
